    heya all,
I'm looking for some impartial advice on what model and make of moped i should go for. basically, i'm going to be travelling about 200 miles a week and i want something that is durable but cheap - doesnt have to look fancy. any suggestions or links??

willing to spend about €2000 (preferably less)

i've looked on the internet - nothing much there - and talked to a few guys in motorbike shops, but i just want some more info (from people with no vested interests) before i part with my cash.

    Get a honda.

Should get a decent X8R-S or X8R-X for that money. I presume you're looking for a 50cc jobbie like.

They are not the fastest, but they are bulletproof.

    have another couple of questions:

ehat would be the speed difference between a moped below 50cc and one above?
is insurance more expensive if you go over 50cc?

If you buy from a shop you can prob go through Aon - they're a broker for Hibernanian. You can play with the online quote on the Hibernian website to get an idea of what you would be paying. My insurance was €100 dearer from hibernian but I went with them after Aon got my details wrong 3 years in a row!! :( Also what age are you - I waited until I turned 25 to get my current bike and the insurance was almost €500 cheaper!! :D:D:D

50cc mopeds are generally restricted to 45kph due to licensing restrictions on your drivers license. Insurers will also expect when they are insuring you that you are on a 45kph scooter/moped.

125cc mopeds are capable of a lot more, probably nearer 65/70mph in some cases.

My bro has a 180cc Gilera Runner that'll do 100mph.. completely mad.

    thanks for the replies guys,
i'll try out that site later, but just fill you in... i'm 26, i've only had a provisional licence and never been insured. i'm probably considered a high risk (i.e. likely to kill everybody on the road) so i guess they'll charge me a **** load of cash.

i dunno what to do about the cc issue. if i have to travel about 40 miles each day it could be pretty tiring on a 50cc moped, so maybe something a bit higher would be better. on the other hand, i wonder if the extra cost for the higher cc bike and the extra insurance is worth it? i only have about 2000 and that's a loan.

    danmit, i hate being poor

    26. Man thats gonna be cheap on the insurance even with the provisional. 25 is when it really drops.
WRT the cc how long do you intend to keep the bike and do that mileage?
I would recommend a 125cc. Firstly it will easily go the distance also it will do it a lot faster than a 50cc. Time is money as they say, also longer in bed in the morning. used to do about 15 miles to college in the morning on a 50cc. Took 40-45min but got a bigger bike and cut 10-15 min of the trip. Single handedly got me through!!!
2000? is that for both the bike and insurance? That might prove hard to get something decent it is. Really shop around. Always offer cash aswell. Generally give you a bit of.

Why not try a 2-stroke 100-125cc motorbike? Something like a Yamaha RXS 100 should be cheap enough and ideal for the commute. I had one as my first bike, top speed 70 mph, great fun, 70 mpg and reliable.

Mopeds can be de-restricted to get a speed of any thing from 45mph to 60mph and its legal once you have an A1 not an M licence this dose'nt affect your insurance.

If you buy anything over 50cc you will be paying group 2 insurance rates not group 1 like mopeds this can double the cost of youre insurance.

If your strapped for cash your best bet is to buy a de-restricted 50cc moped at 25 your insurance should be reasonable
