Looks like we're now going to Amsterdam, could anyone reccomend a good 3 or 4 star in the heart of the nightlife? I believe Dam Square is the centre of the city? Cheers ;)

Screw a hotel. Stay in a hostel with private rooms, it's more fun.

Highly recommend the Golden Tulip New Doelen, but could be a bit pricey. Otherwise the Eden hotel is a good bet. It even has private apartments around the side of the hotel, that's where they put us up for my stag weekend.

Stayed in this one last time I was over. http://www.ibishotel.com/ibis/fichehotel/gb/ibi/3044/fiche_hotel.shtml

It was ok and not too far from Dam Square (around 10-15 minute walk).

btw booked it thru this crowd and I got it cheaper (was a year and a half ago)

The Flying Pig Downtown Hostel,is great, if your'e going for smoking tis just class, nice n chilled, very relaxed, has a later bar too and cheap booze, it wont take more than 5 lads though, (same in almost all hostels)

id say try and get an apartment, the one milltown suggested seems grand, also worth checking out are:

Die Dampkring (anything on the menu, try and get some bubbleHash if they have it, 'tis pretty much the bees knees!)
Grey Area (sprinkle some grey mist on top of a joint... nice!)
    Blues Brothers (temple hash)
Barneys (this place is class, go for a late breakfast fill you up for the day, also has some kick ass weed, laughing buddha was particularly good, very friendly and sociable staff too, bring passport id though)

Grey Area is kind of hard to find, but well well worth it

there is a map on that site, well worth going to some of the better places, also Abraxas is a lovely spot to chill

Is Central Station near Dam Square?

do not and i repeat do not stay in the hotel ben-great location but there is a crazy guy with a parrot and a cat who works there. try asking for your room key when all mushed up and he asks you to hold his parrott for a minute-freaky moment, quite intense conversationalist too.

Central Station is very close to Dam Square, (Abraxas is just off Dam Square) and that area is quite nice, its near the Red Light District which is quite s h i t ty to be honest, another nice area is down near Vondel Park (thats where Die Dampkring is) and its much nicer down there, far less sleazy, and chillin in the sun in the park with a nice spliff (or 2!) and a frisbee is a good laugh

definitely try the Temple Hash, Bubble Hash or Dutch Moonshine hash, they're all very nice, Bubble Hash and Dutch Moonshine, are pretty heavy so good for that, but Temple Hash is beautiful. Tastes lovely and a very pleasant stone, my favourite

Yup, if ye're on about the park behind the Rembrandtheus(great for sundrenched drinking/toking) it's just around the corner from the Leidseplien, where ye'll find a good few Irish bars, Bulldog(which is in the old police station; nothing like getting toatsed inside a real(disused:)) cell!), Boom Chicago, MaccyD's and BurgerKing.

    A few places I'd highly(sic) reccomend:

Hill Street Blues(for weed, space cakes, beer and pool) (on the Warmoestraat)

Rockerij(pronounced rockery) for weed and REAL trippy decor(it's also dead popular with the locals:D) [at the opposite end of the Damrak to Centraal STN.]

Albertheijn (for cheap food when ye've spent all your euros on weed and beer!)

Yeah, Rembradtplein is the heart of the nightlife for lots of people, loads of coffee shops, bars and clubs all around the square, open till up to about 5am, later if it's a full on club. It's about a 10 minute walk to Leidseplein from there, same to Dam Square.

If you take the train from Schiphol to Central Station, you can catch a tram there (1,2 or 5) which will get you to Leidseplein in about 10 minutes.

Enjoy the Hotel American, it's a plush joint, great location!
