    Hi,

Would anyone reccommend a Volvo Dealer?. Have no problem in travelling if the service is good. I am thinking of the new S40, but found the dealership i went to very short and disinterested, and i was going to buy a new car, i can only imagine what they would be like if i had bought the car from them and had a problem.

Any thoughts experiences of main Volvo dealerships, purchasing/problems/service etc?

    Thanks

i would avoid volvo if u are paying for the car, they lose their money pretty quickly.
the new passet is absolutely lovely, i would go with that

thanks Lomb, have pretty much decided on the Volvo (no accounting for taste). Am looking for opinions on the dealerships.

Did test the passat, think it is a car you either love or hate, i hated it. But thats just my personal opinion. As far as depriciation goes, will be keeping the car for a few years (as i always do) so not worried too much about depreciation.

I have heard that JPS in Dun Laoghaire are quite good, I'm afraid I don't have a number for them though...

JPS Motors Tivoli rd Dun Laoghaire 01 2806916

Thanks Eoin_s, may pop out to them this evening arrange a test drive to see what they are like... would be nice to have a dealership i could trust from day one.

My dad had volvos as a company car for 12 years, and he found them fine to deal with - just remember that the servicing is not cheap. Good luck with your test drive!

You looked at the old Passat which has been around since 1997, the new one is not available until June at the earliest and is expected to start at around €30k for the 1.6.

Also have a look at the new Focus, it is basically the same car as the S40 (Ford own Volvo) and just as roomy. Will be alot cheaper to service too.

My local Volvo dealer is a prat i'm afraid so not much help to you there.

Same for Volvo dealers in Galway - I wouldn't buy a Mars Bar off them. There are several 'specialist' multi dealer suppliers after springing up - Cunnigham Higgins in Galway are very popular locally and might be worth a call. Or try and find a similar operation near you?

I went out looking at the new S40 in the limerick Volvo dealership and found the salesmen to be very accommodating.

As for the servicing on a Volvo, what would you guys consider expensive? Any examples?

I'm almost certain to buy a Volvo too.

One or other of my parents has had a Volvo for twenty years and they've always gone to Chapmans in Kildare Town. Never heard any complaints about the quality of service, just the depreciation.

And the new S40 is pretty nice - I was very tempted to go for one myself, but I decided not to risk the potential depreciation woes, although Top Gear say that they expect it to hold its value much better than the old model. I went for a new A3 instead as I've no kids to worry about it'll do for the minute.

    edmund f,
I got a new model S40 2.0D last aug. off Koping on the nass road.
I found them good to deal with, the car had a few software probs(the joys of a new model) which the dealt with promptly so no complaints from me.
The first service was €280-not cheap for a glorified oil change.
Also, go for the SE spec if you can, as its well worth the extra dosh.

I wonder what they base that on. Sure enough the new Volvo S40 = Mazda 3 = Ford Focus. The clever marketing ploy is that they like to see the Volvo competing with Vectra / A4 / Accord / Avensis but in fact it is only one step up from a supermini, not two

One thing they mightn't have told you: the old S40 was built in the Netherlands. The new S40 is built in Belgium

    um...yeah...
And build quality is a lot better as well, regardless of where its built.
Then again, its just a supermini.

    Read my post properly

Don't misinterpret me. I said one step up from a supermini, like a Golf or in fact the Mazda 3, Ford Focus or Volvo S40. Not a Family saloon size car (two steps up from a supermini) like a Mondeo, Passat, Accord, Vectra, Avensis, etc

I deal with a lot of Volvo dealers across the country. Most are good, but by far, the best is Johnson & Perrott in Cork. Great after sales service, imo

I always find Elm Motors expensive. Mind you, they do tend to fix things first time.
