Help...iChat and msn mess...

    Hi to all

I have tried a few different things to get this problem sorted, but am nowhere close..I am looking for some help using msn messenger and i Chat. I am the one with the pc, my friend lives in France...he has a mac.

I have tried using msn for mac, but there is no AV facility working. Have tried other things but they don't work or were too difficult to use...

We can ''talk'' via text but thats a real pain. I would like to be able to chat with him, but can't.The visual is not that important....

one way to have audio in msn is for me to set up a .mac account???

Is this correct and if so, could someone tell me what the account settings [outgoing and incoming mail server] in XP's OE and other settings that I would need, or if necessary, where I could find this out....MSN or Apple???...am confused and am fairly fed up with all this at this stage...any help or 'other' ideas that work would be appreciated !

    Cheers,

    Chris

I heard that ms is coming out with a version of messenger compatible with iChat at some stage...anyone know about its debut?

I'm not really sure about the iChat / Messenger problems you're having, but it seems to me like you should try Skype, which is a free Internet telephony program. I haven't used it but I've heard it works well.

You know what? I bet it's a firewall problem at either or both ends. iChat AV needs to open up some non-standard ports I think, and I imagine that there could be firewall issues at etiher end prventing this traffic getting through. I don't know whow to figure it out for XP, but for OS X, you need to go to

    System Preferences
    Sharing
    Firewall

and then make a rule to open up ports 5060, 5190, 5297, 5298

Obviously you need Administrator privileges to do this.

You'll also need to make sure your router / NAT allows traffic on those ports too

    There's a comprehensive guide here

    Good luck!

Check out AOL Instant Messenger, I read somewhere that it's compatible with iChat for AV.

iChat AV is only compatible with AOL Instant Messanger in text or video mode, not audio only. see: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25748#faq5
