    robert

could you be more speific, what form of shyness do you have. I always found that i suffer from a general about meeting ppl, once i got to know them i was cool, that initial 15mins was always a nightmare for me.

I remember trying to meet people and it was a nightmare and still is.

Maybe you have a self esteem problem, for me it was a low self opinion/worth but i got over it, i am still no schmozer and still can not beak into a conversation with strangers but it gets easier. A small bit of confidence goes along way but becarefull that confidence does not equate to cockiness.

In my own experience, the only way to get over shyness is to get used to meeting people. I used to be quite shy, but I forced myself to meet and interact with others, and I think I'm pretty much over it now. I'm still reserved in conversation and the like, but I don't have a problem meeting people and chatting with them.

Depends on what age you are I guess. If you are in a position to travel a bit, that does the world of good for confidence and means that you have no choice but to meet up and talk with new and different people.

If not, its just a question of taking the leap of faith you will soon find out that SOME people are actually pretty nice people!

If you are in college - the best way is to join a few college societies and clubs - you meet loads of people that way.

If you're in school, then there could be loads of youth club stuff going on.

Many people are shy and its ok to be so, you pick up your confidence though by interacting with people.

I am not sure if you ever get over shyness - you just learn to live with it. I would tend to talk and then think sometimes when I am very nervous (not recommended!), but in the end there were too many things that I wanted to do which shyness stopped me from doing so in the end I just concentrated on those goals and the shyness was less of an issue then. As the Smiths song goes - "shyness is nice, but shyness can stop you from doing all the things in life you'd like to". It can be dealt with and no-one will think any the less of you if you are a little shy in any case.

As some of the other posters said, you can try and get out more and try and meet new people. If the problem is acute, in other words, if it's seriously impacting your happiness you should consult your doctor. He or she will probably recommend that you see a cognitive behavioral psychologist. Don't worry; it's not as scary as it sounds :). Cognitive behavioral psychology simply tries to identify the beliefs that cause your shyness, for example, you may believe that when you start talking to someone you'll make some sort of social mistake and people will laugh at you, and demonstrate how these beliefs are inaccurate. They'll also show you how to stop these thoughts coming into your head in the first place.

Cognitive behavioral psychology is very effective for most people. If you're still having problems, your doctor may be able to prescribe some medication to help you overcome your social phobias. Again, like cognitive behavioral psychology, this has been shown to be extremely effective.

The key thing to remember is that you're not the only one who suffers from this condition and whats more, it's perfectly treatable.

Firstly thank you for expanding on this ambiguous statement.

Secondly, my use of rolleyes technology was also implying an exasperation towards the possible hinting of medical advice: whether or not it was or not.

"Drugs" implies to take some medication, which implies go to the doctor to get it checked it out, as this is the person who prescribes the drugs. I think that could be good advice if the original posters shyness is serious. Hence no need for the rolleyes technology. But then again maybe case n basket wasn't implying that.

A good and simple way is to find a really outgoing friend of yours and spend time with them, they will drag you along to talk to people when you would naturally hold back........

It breaks the cycle - you are shy and don't have a big circle of friends and not knowing many people makes it hard to interact in a social situation and you feel more shy......

Yes, I don't think case n basket was implying that.

Also, this is not a forum for recommending/implying legal or illegal drugs for personal problems.
