It’s an incredibly potent drink, much favoured in French Café society in the 19th century. It was banned for nearly a century in most parts of Europe, its been making a big comeback in the UK of late in certain circles.

My sis was at a dinner party recently, middle aged professional types, something about an unusual French drink being drunk. People got absolutely hammered drunk and started acting really strangely. Absinthe with wormwood is supposed to have hallucinogenic qualities. I have a feeling that’s what they were drinking. Just wondering is it on sale in Ireland?

not sure about the wormwood unfortunately. But if ya get this, heres a trick. As soon as ya shot it cover the mouth of the shot glass instantly. After 4-5 seconds put it to your mouth and inhale quickly. Gives ya a slight high for about 30 seconds where your just real relaxed and also stops it coming back up for the weaker drinker. Works with any too shot too afaik

I'm curious as to the term "The Green Fairy", as I've never heard it called that, though I have heard it called "The Green Goddess" (particularly in Aleister Crowley's treatise Absinthe: The Green Goddess) and in the Gay community, especially in London, it was long known as "Oscar's Bane". Where did you pick up the term "Green Fairy"?

Oh, BTW even burning wormwood sticks in an enclosed area is dangerous, really, the stuff should be considered a rather dangerous drug. I'm not saying not to take it, but the same warnings that apply to other drugs, legal or illegal, apply.

You wont get that 19th century stuff in Ireland or anywhere easy, friends brought home a fair few bottles from Prague last week and to be honest its just a horrible overly strong spirit with no other effects.

green fairy is the term it was refered to in france, during the late 19th century. theres a reference to it at the start of Moulin Rouge, Kylie is the green absinthe fairy, and it was a common label for the stuff.

it was part of the campaign to get it banned when it was banned in france, "ban the green fairy" after a number of violent murders and assaults (Van gogh cut off a friends ear as a token of his love for a prostitute they were courting, and before anyone tries to correct me, I'm aware he also cut of his ear, this was a seperate incident, look the guy had a thing about ears okay) while on a absinthe bender.

Redmonds in Ranelagh have the good **** at €60 a bottle. For that money you could get a very decent bottle of whiskey.

Truthfully the oddest most psychotical addled nights drinking i've had have occured on the stuff. I keep a bottle in the drinks cabinet, for when I fancy a drink look in see, theres only absinthe, and think to myself. Y'know I actually fancy a cuppa.
