I heard on the radio today that America are considering introducing a scheme where Irish workewrs living illegalluy in the USa can be fined but also offered with a visa if they pay this fine. Does anyone know of any links, or know the details of this. Most interested to know how long you have to be working there and any other conditions of this deal, and also how large the fine is.

I live and work in the US and haven't heard anything specfic about this. I doubt very much there is anything going on directly targeting illegal irish workers as they make up a tiny percentage of illegal immigrants in the united states. I have heard Bush is pushing some stuff that would allow illegal immigrants who have lived and worked in the united states for a good amount of time(many years) to qualify for a visa. He is facing a lot of opposition even from his own party on this as generally the republican party are againist giving any help to illegal immigrants. Funnily enough Bush seems to recognise that these immigrants are an essential part of the economy and need some help.

If you are thinking of coming to work illegaly, pay some fine and then be handed a visa I think you would be in for a rude awakening.

I think I saw something on TV that they'll be cracking down on it via your Driver's Licence.

Apparently, your DL is an essential document in the states, and without it, you're pretty much screwed for everything. They'll stop renewing licences to aliens

Its for the hispanics [spelling?], who the Republicans are trying to get. Also, its basically a 3 year trial, show your working clean, and then you can apply for pernament residency.

Dunno if it'll get through, as they (the Americans) are afraid it'll encourage the Mexicasn to try their luck more.
