they arent in the EU so its the same as a US import AFAIK

They however are in the EEA customs free area, it should be treated as if posting from the EU.

Nice one, I was hoping there would be some kind of 'special relationship' like the visa thing.

Yes they do, and I also believe they stand "shoulder to shoulder" with the EU on matters of security.
