Just got a new PC for work and even though there are 4 x 1 gig DDR 2 chips windows XP is only telling me there is 3.25gigs. Is this a problem with Xp or my BIOS?

Make sure the motherboard can support 4gb of ram.

who supplied the pc, is it self built or from a supplier like dell?

Supposedly it should, it's a dc 7100 and the hp site says it can take the Ram just wondering if it was a windows issue

you could test individual modules to see if any is damaged(only use one at a time), what program are you using to tell you how much ram?

It came from a supplier, just rang him and he said it was an xp problem, can't see that though. Why would they have pc's for sale that the operating system doesn't fully recognise. has anyone else had this problem?

Just the windows system. I know enough to know i know nothing about this. there any way of testing the ram without going into the system folder

    Cheers lads!
From what i can gather pci keeps some of the ram in reserve and doesn't let the operarting system use all of it when you have more than 3gigs

I think the article below may explain - basically your limitation is caused by the 32-bit version of Windows and hardware
