Lidl's DVD/VCR help

I just bought one of the Silvercrest DVD/VCR player/recorders from Lidl this morning - http://www.lidl.ie/ie/index.nsf/pages/c.o.oow.20050303.p.DvdVcr

I am having difficulty tuning in my TV channels on the VCR side. It is connected to my NTL analogue cable. It finds about 5 channels - E4, discovery etc. The manual says that it supports UHF, but there is no mention of VHF. As far as I know the majority of channels are broadcast on VHF here. Isn't that correct? Anyway, I called the helpline and a nice German girl took my details and asked her colleagues but said that they haven't had any problems with this before in Ireland and asked me to connect it to another TV point. If it doesn't support VHF is there an adapter or something that can convert it to UHF or am I dreaming?

yes most of the channels are broadcast in VHF.
There should be an option do to a manual tune though, and possibly enter the frequencies directly. There is no way of converting VHF to UHF that I am aware of.if you look up http://www.ntl.com/locales/ie/en/athome/frequency.html it will give you the frequency lists of thestations in your area.

Thanks kenmc for your quick reply.

Unfortunately I can't seem to enter the frequencies manually. I can scroll through the channels from 21 to 70 which I assume are within the UHF range.
I will try Google again to see if a converter exists.

    Cheers
    Dara

If you subscribe to the NTL analogue premium services (no longer marketed, and I believe now limited to Sky Sports 1) you could use that decoder as a tuner. Or if you have an old VCR, that would also work (though eliminating the point of buying a new one).

If you bought it in the Republic take it back to Lidl since any TV or video sold there should have both VHF and UHF tuners

There are boxes you can get for converting VHF to UHF but they can be hard to find, pricey and are yet another box to go under the TV

Yeah bring it back to Lidl. It sounds like its UHF only.(21-69)
Don't even waste your time looking for one of those converters. Theres too much stuff on the UHF band now that will only clash with channels the converter puts onto UHF.

Hey thanks everyone. Its a grand machine all the same apart from the VHF issue. I just wanted it so the kids could watch their DVDs and old video tapes. My main VCR is a Sony so I am in two minds about whether to keep it or not.
