    Please excuse my ignorance on this matter, but could somebody please explain what pings are and what relevance they are, if any, to ordinary users who are not technically minded.

    Thank You.

    Moderators, please feel free to move this thread to FAQs if necessary.

    Packet Internet Groper. A program used to test whether a particular network destination is online, by sending an Internet control message protocol (ICMP) echo request and waiting for a response. (Also called packet internet gopher).

    It's a measurement of how long it takes stuff you send across the internet to arrive at its destination. They're almost always measured in milliseconds (ms). You'll only really be intrested in your ping times if you play online games a fair bit.

    Go to a command prompt (Start>Run> cmd) and type the folllowing:

    ping google.com

    you'll be able to see your ping times:

    Reply from 216.239.57.99: bytes=32 time=225ms TTL=242
    Reply from 216.239.57.99: bytes=32 time=166ms TTL=242
    Reply from 216.239.57.99: bytes=32 time=170ms TTL=242

    Ping statistics for 216.239.57.99:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
    Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 166ms, Maximum = 225ms, Average = 181ms

    Can be useful if you're troubleshooting.

    Isn't that what Moriarty said? I was just elaborating.

    Thanks lads, I was just curious. I don't play games on the net, but I'd like to get to grips with VOIP. I've a friend in Sweden who uses it to talk to his family in Estonia. But I'm working on Mac, he's on pc, as I suspect most others are here too.

    I'm off now to get some info on Google about Mac based VOIP software.
