I ordered what looks like a good deal to me (for the parents so it's probably way over powered) a Dell from their outlet store.. Here are the spec :

    Dimension 4700 - 3Ghz - 160.00Gb HD - 512.00Mb Mem - - - Modem - Dimension 4700, Pentium 4, (3.0GHz) MiniTower - - 1.44MB Floppy Drive - - 160GB (7200rpm) Serial ATA Hard Drive - - Dell Standard PS2 Keyboard - UK - - Dimension Resource CD - - Dell 2 Button PS/2 Scroll Mouse - - DMX Dell Media Experience 2.1 - - Norton Internet Securities 90 day English - - Doc Dimension 4700 ENG/UK Cord - - Cyberlink PDVD 5.3 - - Sonic S/W RN7.1 MYDVD 5.3 - DVD/RW+R - - 16 X DVD +/- RW - - 512MB , NON-ECC400MHZ DDRII - - V.92 Data Fax Modem Ire/Spn - - Microsoft® Works® 7.0 - UK - - English - Adobe Reader 6.0 - - Paint Shop Photo Album Standard Eng - - 128MB PCI Express ATI RadeonTM X300 SE - - English - Win XP SP2 Home (Backup Media) - - English - Win XP SP2 Home - 1

    431.00 431.00 (ex VAT + Del)

    What do you think?

Witha 17inch ultra flat LCD the total (inc VAT + del) came to 770

The two most important things I was looking for was 512Megs RAM + no -onboard graphics.. The DVD-R was a bonus

While everybody thinks Dell are overpriced, i would consider that a good deal

I wouldn't say dell are overpriced, they're just not what most of the computer buffs here are after. Most of the geeks here (myself included) sacrifice price for quality and control. Don't think I could build a similarly spec'd machine for less.

I think that the machine above represents a fairly cheap family machine that should last a long time to come. Though it wont be any use for anything even moderately graphically intensive that's probably not a problem.

Yea, that was what I was getting it for.

go for it diarmuid... theres only a few really good deals on the outlet store every few weeks/months.

    As for overpriced, I recently got a Dimension 8400, 3.4Ghz, 1GB ddr2 ram, 250gb sata hard drive, 256mb x800 radeon, dvd+-RW & sound blaster audigy 2 for €800.

a workmate of mine was getting a gaming pc for around the €3k mark but instead bought one I got from the outlet store previously for €850 with more or less the same spec as the gaming pc he was going to get.

I dont know why anyone bothers even trying to compete with dell's pricing anymore. but that's just me.. I'm biased after getting a nice computer from them.

I bought on aswell. You have to keep an eye on the outlet store and grab a deal when you see one. Some of the machines on offer are too expensive, but occasionally a deal comes along.

Looks like a ok deal to me. The 4600 and 4700 have onboard Intel Extreme gfx and an AGP on thr 4600 and PCI-e on the 4700. So you can sell the X300 and make it even cheaper. Mine came with a fx5200 which I sold and put a 9600XT instead. You can't use the onboard AND the AGP/PCI-e at the same time though. But most cards have dual vga/dvi anyway so its no loss.

Anyone ever have problems buying from the Dell Outlet store? I added a shipping address to my credit card as instructed but for some reason my order was cancelled. I only found this out when I rang up to see where the PC had gotten to cos the delivery date had passed. When I rang my credit card company they said the payment had been authorised the day I made the purchase but the money was never deducted..

When I ordered my laptop from Dell's main store, I had to change the actual address for my (Ulster Bank) credit card to the delivery address, get the order processed then change it back again.

I think it's just them being too security conscious. Better too much than too little, I guess.
