Broken touchpad

I decided to have a look inside my laptop to see how easy(!) it would be to install extra RAM. It's a Sony Vaio. Well it turns out it wasn't designed to be opened easily. I snapped off two metal bits that were holding the keyboard on and when I put it all back together the touchpad wasn't working.

So I opened it up again and I saw that the ribbon cable that connects the touchpad to the motherboard had come out. Now it took me about 15 minutes to get it back in because the connection was in the middle of the motherboard and I could only lift the keyboard about about two inches due to the ribbon connecting the keyboard to the motherboard.

I had to squeeze my hand in and try to push the ribbon in with two fingers. Anyway I managed to tear the ribbon so it's f__ked. :( So what do I do now? I've searched for websites that sell Sony parts but I can't find the ribbon I need so should I bring it into PC World or somewhere to get it repaired and how much is it likely to cost? Any advice appreciated.

buy one of these .http://komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=301787&cks=PRL .it would work out much cheaper than getting it fixed.

Yeah I have a mouse but I'm so used to using the touch pad. I imagine it would be expensive to get it fixed.

Why is it so difficult to open a laptop? Do they not want people upgrading harddrives and RAM? Is it just Sony Vaios that are like this?

It's rather unusual that one would have to remove the keyboard to get at the RAM. There are some Dells that have RAM under the keyboard (the latitude D400 comes to mind) but the second slot is user-accessible at the base of the machine. You definitely had to poke around under the keyboard?

There is one slot accessible from underneath but the other one is deep inside.
