Cullen and the M3

I see Martin Cullen decided to commute in to Dublin from Dunshaughlin at 6.30am. The journey allegedly took him 90 minutes and he's been on the various news reports stating that this underlines the need for the M3 to get rid of these delays and improve the quality of life for commuters.

One wonders do these politicans think before they speak! Will the commute from the Dunshaughlin be reduced. Highly unlikely. Why?

    - The delays are primarily caused by the tail backs from where the N3 meets the M50. Where the real trouble begins is when the N3 becomes a dual carriageway (so now change there).
    - All the traffic north of Fairyhouse Cross (jnct of Trim Road and N3) will have to Q for tolls at this point.

The reality is no change for Dunshaughlin commuters. Navan and Kells commuters will be spared the traffic jam at Dunshaughlin while commuters in the village will enjoy waiting on the single junction that serves the village.

Ironically, the N3 is being upgraded ahead of the N9 that leads into Cullens own constituency. The N9 is a far inferior road than the N3 and has been many years. Why on earth is the N3 getting piority over a inter city route that needs to be upgraded??

You are 100% correct regarding the dubious benefits of the M3. Plus the M1 is under-utilised so a better solution is:-

    (1) Build a link road to the M1

    (2) Re-build the Navan train link up

Easy peasy, but not for Mr Martin "The NRA said jump, I said how high" Cullen

They must have their commuter motorway!! How dare you two question the eminent minister! Railways? Railways? Everyone knows they do nothing to ease congestion, sure that's why CIE and the UTA ripped 'em all up in the 50's. Get with the times, maaaan.

This story was in the Irish Times today. Why do the media cover this story without ridiculing Cullen and his election sidekick? The article states its a 10 mile journey (whats a mile) into the city. The distance is actually 27km and approximately 30% is already high quality dual carriageway. The M3 will actually create another bottle neck for commuters and do nothing to increase their quality of life.
