    Folks,

Looking for a definitive answer on this, exactly what size of dish do I need to pick up moderate reception from this satellite ? I know that it can be got, but do I really need a 2.4m dish ??? How about 1.6 or 1.8m ?

I am based 30 miles north west of dublin.

    Regards.

unfortunately that bird is one of the most difficult to get around this part of the world but if you wanted to be guaranteed a signal you would want at least 2.4m maybe even 3m. from reading various forums there are people in continental europe who are getting a mid level signal with a 2.4m so on that basis to be certain of a signal on both horizontal and vertical you would probably need a bigger dish and to be honest i'm not sure how many people on this forum would be able to answer your question.

anyway, good luck and i hope you find out what you need to know.

If its showtime you are interested in then this package has just recently been launched on 62 east and can be picked up in the uk and ireland with a 1m or 1.2 dish.

Sorry to hijack this thread but how difficult is it to pick up Atlantic Bird 3 @ 5W, and would there be difficulties viewing secam channels thru' an old analogue receiver?

just remember that you'll need a near perfect view of the horizon to get that satellite but if you do, like ejhearn sid you should be able to get it ok.

you should have no problem picking up this bird with an 80cm+ dish. to receive the channels your old receiver would have to be able to decrypt secam.

Does anyone know the legality regarding 2.4 m Dishes? isnt anything above 1m kinda risky ? plus is there any lightweight 2.4 dish or rather a dish that is light weight prefarably portable and can acomodate 5 LNB's ??? and oh yeah in drogheda any better chance of getting NILESAT 7W ??

A bit sparkly on a 80cm Dish at times, B&W on a PAL TV, You need to select different sound de-empahisis J-something or the audio is distorted.

Apart from France1 and M6 you get better on 5W digital (wrong SR for a Digibox). Much stronger signal. PAL output or RGB from a Digital Receiver.

The further south and east you are, the better your chance of receiving Nilesat. 2.4M is a bare minimum I reckon (more like 3M+), and that's only for some Horiztonal TPs, you can forget Vertical.

An aluminium 2.4M will be the lightest (60kg or so). It's a play off between weight and strength. One piece is best in terms of strength and performance, but expect to hand over plenty of euros for it + difficulty sourcing it. And without any guarantee that it will receive what you want.

Precision Antenna are the nearest manufacturer of such dishes.

As for legality, it's a case of what they (planners or neighbours) can't see, won't worry them. The planning regulations are a bit of a grey area AFAICS, as they all seem to focus on dishes attached to houses, not free standing.

And you want a 2.4m on ground attached to serious concrete in a big pit and fat pole. Not on a roof or Chimney :)

Unless you're Swedish, in which case it's perfectly normal to attach a 1.8M to your chimney!! But then it's really only an itty-bitty dish when you have a 3.7M and 4.5M to play around with.

I got my polarities mixed up above - it's the horiztonals that are weak, not verticals.

There a guy in Manchester (similar latitude to Dublin) who reports reception with a 2M.
"I get Nilesat Vertical Transponders all the time except very heavy rain. Horizontal transponders as mentioned are very weak and I see 11919H as the strongest followed by 11766H.

I am located near Manchester using a 2m Prime Focus Professional Quality Dish with Invacom 0.3dB LNB and Matched Feedhorn."

In as much as you can ever predict out-of-footprint reception, you might expect a 2.4M to perform similarly in Drogheda.

bit of thread reviving here, has anyone in the Dublin area tuned in nilesat? and what setup did you use?

    Hi there,
I was eager to put this one to bed. I can confirm my installers installed 1.8 Meter offset dish with a .2db Titanium edition lnb in Rosscahill, Galway at the weekend and received most of Nilesat.

We had a very happy customer indeed.

Most of the showtime package worked. I can confirm some transponder may drop out at certain times of the day which confirms a larger dish would obviously work better.

I'll post which transponders worked well later.

This thread started nearly 4 years ago.

If you REALLY want to talk about Nilesat a make a new thread. This one would be too confusing.
