Yellow rubber bands?

What's the deal, there were a load of early 20s bank drones down the shops at lunchtime and they were all wearing yellow rubber bands on their wrists. Are the part of some stationery cupboard-loving gang? Is this fashion? WTF is going on? What's next, Post-it notes on the forehead?

ive no idea , but they suck.

There the Lance Armstrong band to promote Cancer awareness. Seem to be more of a fashion item though.
Dont need to wear a band to be aware of cancer.

i picked up a red(childline) one in tower records that has listen engraved on it.
the only reason i wear it is because i love the colour red(i still would of bought it, regardless of the colour though)

Theres black ones (livewrong) for people who want to be uber cool

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,035 ✭✭✭Bri

I hate the way everyone finds something to moan about with these (see other related threads). The cash goes to charity so if people like wearing them to look cool and have no other thoughts on the matter, the good is still done. I do accept that the Nike connection bothers some people legit.

There's loads of fakes and spin offs. The Lance Armstrong ones are at: laf.org or http://www.laf-store.org/.

What, to wear with your white hooded robes?
if people like wearing them to look cool

Yes, except you just look like a tool that's wearing a yellow rubber band.

I have a box of 400 assorted brown rubber bands, which can be worn as a symbol that you are against 3rd world debt. Only €1.99 each, roll up roll up.

Well thanks for clearing that up magpie, he didn't realised he looked like a TOOL. Heaven forbid that someone should wear something that someone else doesn't like, what is this? Communist Russia?

In mother Russia the band wears with you.

Band looks best with goths, it likes im a goth....with a heart.
    So out there.

i already have a band that says i'm against 3rd world debt. it's not rubber. it's white. i don't particularly care if people think i look like a tool. i wear it because it's fun to play with

I dont want one, why not just give money to charity, instead of trying to show people that you do, I'd prefer to do it in secret, but maybe that's just me.

most people buy them off ebay so theyre not actually giving money to charity.

    thats the best bit,
everyone thinks your helping people with cancer , when your actually giving money to some prick in his bedroom who bought all the wristbands so he could charge twice the price for them

    yay

I wear them because I beleive in the cause they represent, and I don't give a f*ck what people think, it's the people who wear them Nike ones with words like respect on them that really annoy me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,258 ✭✭✭✭Rabies

Saw them last year in the states. Hadn't a clue what they were until I asked. Got a "Make Poverty History" band from oxfam.org a while ago. Was cloth not usual rubber.

    actually....
wouldnt it be you donating the money as the person who is selling them to you on ebay has bought them before hand..kinda like giving somebody money to walk down to the shop and drop some change in the charity box, ofcourse though if he overcharges he will get a little profit, but in the end,you have lost money and the charity has gained....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 126 ✭✭shelsfan

And it will probably encourage 'him' to buy more for resale, thus making more money for the charity (and for him)...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,317 ✭✭✭Chalk

    yeah,
i care so much about the charity id rather pay a tenner to wear a 1 euro piece of plastic that proves it, than give some money to the charity.

its like ticket touts, only wrong on so many more levels.

    /edit
just to add, the prices on ebay have dropped now that they are more easily available than they were a few months ago.
strangley enonough the price of postage ranges from £1.50 to £5.00
an odd price to send an envelope that weighs less than a few grammes,
and should cost about 28p, at most, to send

Well, that explains why the price is lower, they're now making the money from postage.

i thought they brought out the bracelts because it was costing to much to make the pins and other such items plus they are made from recycled products??

why are people so negitive if you dont like it fine dont buy it,

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 126 ✭✭shelsfan

    why are people so negitive
People are negative because of the hypocrisy of Nike etc...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 652 ✭✭✭stringy

speaking from a fashion/appearance point of view, is it not cooler to not wear the band things, I do fully support what they're for though. why not give dough to the charities anyway without havin a need to broadcast that you do? most people are wearing them to be cool, which is kinda not the point.

all you people, live strong but why be slaves to this dated trend

    start another charity trend...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,851 ✭✭✭PurpleFistMixer

Well at least it IS a charity trend, as opposed to a ... not charity trend.
Still, I reckon, if you want to help charity, just give them money. No need to fooster around with anything else.

Well now you hardly believe Livestrong are going to make these bands for free. Besides they are as common as grass and you won't be seen dead wearing one in a couple of weeks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,559 ✭✭✭The tax man

I think the charity end of things has been overtaken by the fashion\coolness of wearing these bands.
Just in case you forget your nationality

When you're too pissed to talk to the barman, just slap your wrist up on the bar.

BTW I wear a watch on my wrist. :D:D

i think more than anything at this stage they raise mod awareness. nowadays if i'm on the street in town and i'm confused by a mod in goths clothing, all i have to do is look at the persons wrist. so at least they're good for something ay?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 166,026 ✭✭✭✭LegacyUser

    they're mainly worn by tossers.

I agree here. Its a good cause and a lot of money is being raised but why do people have to broadcast the fact they gave money to a charity. What will happen in 3 months time when this 'fad' fades away?
Will these 'do-gooders' walk into a a local shop and put €2 in the a charity box. The sad fact is no, because theres no reward. Who will know they donated? I hear my friends saying i want a black one or red on or whatever and then 'whats that colour for?' Dont even know what charity they want to help.
One last thing. if you wear more than one band (different colours) and the colours clash, are you still 'Cool'?

who ever thought a mark of supporting a charity could be cool......
It's a stroke of genius for the Armstrong organisation... its pulled in over $40m on the back of its current campaign.
I say "well done" to all charities who gain from this.
Who cares if its cool or not.. the fact is millions is going to good causes.
Like many have said, it is a fad (in terms of "coolness"), but its been one heck of an interesting ride that marketeers and trend setters have been amazed by.
What next... perhaps coloured rings? coloured eye lenses?

:QUOTE: What next... perhaps coloured rings? coloured eye lenses? :QUOTE:

eh HELLOOO :D .. havent you heard of 'The Silver Ring Thing'... you buy these rings to show that you believe in abstaining from sex before marraige! Huge over in bible belt america yet its been proven that over half these ring wearers 'give in' and well u kno.... ;)

Was in Dublin City center yesterday and the hawkers were floggin them for €2
"Get your rubber bands, 2 for a fiver"
Bunches of kids were queueing and buying feckin rakes of the things.

Hah bet all the "charitable" types who were doing hit for "the kids" rather than jumping on a fashion bandwagon will be ripping thm off their arms licetty-split now that every skanger in the world is wearing about 27 on each wrist!

therre are black ones brought out by ronan keating too for the marie keating foundation(cancer)
i think they are a great idea, i'd prefer to buy one of these bands and wear it than give money to those utterly annoying people on the street everyday.

Ah, I first came across this trend when I looked in a magazine during the summer and they had photographs of Lindsey Lohan and other such 'celebrities' wearing the yellow ones. I agree with the point that's been made before though - why do you have to wear a bracelet to say LOOK AT ME, I GIVE MONEY TO CHARITY!!

I heard that hospitals are trying to stop their patients wearing them because of potential misunderstandings... A yellow bracelet, in the hospital context, means 'Do not resucitate'. I don't know if that's true though
