Introducing Raleigh Ireland

    Hello all,

May I introduce a new charity to you all that you might be interested in. I am the coordinator for Raleigh Ireland. We are a youth development charity based in Dundalk, Co.Louth and our parent organisation is Raleigh International based in the U.K.

Let me tell you a bit about the charity. First off we have nothing to do with Raleigh bikes, (they won't even support us). Our aim is to help young people develop their potentials and abilities through challenge expeditions working on community, environmental and adventure projects in Ireland and in developing countries around the world. We take volunteers from all backgrounds from the age of 17-25 on 4, 7 and 10 week long expeditions to developing countries such as Namibia, Ghana, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Chile, Malasia and Fiji. These list of countries are reviewed every two years and may be changed.

On expedition the volunteers will work on three projects:

    • Community, e.g. Building a school, hostel or other development projects
    • Environmental, e.g. Work with endagered and protected animals like cheetah's
    • Adventure, e.g. Climbing the ice sheets of Chile to trekking the Namib desert, to under water explorations in Fiji
All our projects are sustainable over continous development programme and are in conjuction with project partners in the country.

If you are over 25 we also need volunteer staff to help manage and run the expeditions. We also run a successful Youth at Risk programme called Motive8. So Raleigh has open volunteering oppurtunities to suit everybody. For the last twenty year Raleigh has enabled over 28,000 people to volunteer on 1,800 different development projects overseas.

Raleigh Ireland was established on September 2004 by a returning volunteer. We have gone from strength to strength and we hope to be able to bring the Raleigh experience to as many young people in Ireland as possible.

This is just a taster of what we are about. For more information please feel free to post questions here, visit us at www.RaleighIreland.cjb.net or call us on 085-RALEIGH (085-7253444)
