Put up a poster in the area where u found it. where did u find it? dont give out the number but give details of when it was found, where, at what time.

There's a number you can call to get numbers blacklisted on your phone so you dont receive anything from the i.e. calls or texts. I'll see if i can find it for you.

there is a disclaimer on the vodafone site stating you are liable if you send obscene texts or make nuisence calls
would check into it harder if i were you,as you definately would have a chance of making a complaint

You can defo complain to the phone company about it - give it another lash.

Reverse number lookup is illegal under the data protection act here so trying to do that is definitely out. You need to do everything either through the Gardai or the phone company itself.

Try calling the number from different public phones or someone else's mobile every couple of days and see if they answer, maybe you'll be able to guess who it is or even trick them into giving you some information about themselves. It's worth a shot. If you're lucky enough to guess who it is you should then divert all your calls to their house number one night

Vodafone (I assume they are your operator) should be able to do something about the calls. The only thing that should stop them is if it was a private/witheld number, in which case they're prevented from using it by the Data Protection Act afaik.

Ultimately though you'll probably be told by Vodafone to talk to the Gardai and vice versa.

I've had similar problems a couple of times in the past and just ended up ignoring the calls and letting the caller waste credit until they got bored and gave up.

    Right.
This is questionable advice.. but ring Vodafone, Meteor..whoever.. find out who the phone is registered to..

If they say it is not registered.. hang up and ring them back and say 'Hello I would like to register my phone with you.' Fake name fake address...ring back a week later say your phone was stolen give the fake name and address.. and you want your number cancelled.

    It's good to talk.

    Tom

If all else fails I think all the operators offer a free change of number when you do so due to nuisance calls.

You could always call vodaphone & tell them its your kid's phone & that your poor little baby is getting abusive texts
they might pay more attention then
cos theyll be afraid that you'll "go public"

does registering a phone number not involve vodaphone/meteor/o2 sending out a text message to that number?

you could just ask them to block the number. anyone making nuiisance calls with their caller identification on needs their head checked.

you might also try to call the phones answering machine to see if there are any clues there as to wether or not you actually know this person.

to do this just put the number 5 between the 087 and the seven digit number.

thanks guys, all recommendations are really appreciated, i like the registering idea, but yes, they only send a code to the phone so thats a problem. what i would like to do is find out who owns it, then take the relevant action, maybe someone working with vodafone could help, unofficially of course. ;)

i work for one of the mobile phone operators in ireland and i can tell you that vodaphone will never give you any info on who a number is registered to - data protection. all you can do i s put a request in writing to vodaphone head office in Louth(?) and explain your situation and that you want the number to be blocked from contacting you. Send a copy of the letter to the gardai and comreg (mobile telecommunications regulator in Ireland) and let vodaphone know that the cops and comreg have also got the letter. - this is the only way you will get a result.

Get someone who can Phish. Ring up the number and explain that you are [insert official sounding place] and [insert something terrible has happened] but you can remedy it by proving they are the owners of the phone and you require name and address (and throw in date of birth). Also explain you need to verify an id number on the phone and to ask for a land line number to call them back on.

Do it during working hours and you have thier work number.

This happend to me, what I did was I got a female friend to ring and say she was from Vodaphone conducting a customer service survey and if they co-operated there account would be credited with ten Euro. I laid out a few questions for her to ask, such as are you happy with the service etc and Date of Birth and name address, it worked, then I text them back that I knew who they were etc.

Texts stoped, and scare the shíte out of her

thanks people, actually tried that JJ , but i think they have got a new sim card and only use the original one to abuse people, i have my phone set to receive delivery reports, and sent a blank message to his/her phone, so when they power up, my delivery report comes through, and i know when they are active, i ring, and naturally, just get heavy breathing on the other end! they will be breathing heavy when i get hold of em.................

im actually having the same problem, this idiot leaves on "her" number.
she likes to do sexual noises over the phone and abuse me.
trying to get the number blocked but to no avail

You know why they wont block the numbers for you? They make money off the dodgy calls and all the calls you make back. There afarid any customer (dodgy or not) that they block might change network. Its down to money (and greed).

:D ring 0875 and then the rest of the number, then press #0000# and listen to their voicemails, then change the pin, then ring them and ask them do they want the pin of thier phone, just make sure your voice mail is password protected

Abusive/threating Texts or phone calls are a criminal offense...

Recored them, time & date etc... (in the case of Text's keep a copy) and go to the Garda and file a complaint.

From there you have two options.

    Option 1
Send on a letter stamped by the Garda to you operator and they will give you a new number.

    Option 2
Ask the gards to follow up your complaint. In this case they will contact the mobile operators with the details and any relevant data etc will be sent back to them.

Smart thinking BUT all they gotta do is dial 171 from there phone and re-set it, no pin is asked when you call it from your own phone.

if you can find no reasonable way of blocking the calls then i suggest the following:

Go online and use your 300 or so free text messages and send them all to the number involved. When they turn on the phone it will get flooded with messages. Generally this causes the phone to freeze up. Do this for a few months every time you get your online text messages full again. Im sure that this will get him/her to stop.
