Partitioned a 200gb drive to 120gb

Just got a new motherboard and a new 200gb maxtor drive, and when I partition the drive with one primary partition to fill the drive and format it to ext3, it turns out to be just 120gb in total.

    What's up here?

Some people said I didn't have LBA64 or something (not sure about 64) enabled, so I went in to the BIOS and changed the relevant setting from "Auto" to "LBA" (there's no setting that involves LBA followed by a number). Repartitioned, rebooted and reformatted, and still just the same ****e.

    Any ideas?

Is it possible that your harddrive is set to 'compatability mode' or something like that? Some drives come with a jumper for that setting which limits the number of platters that the drive uses/reports.

go to http://www.maxtor.com and get a file called maxblast 3. you may also need a program called big drive enabler.
my bios only picks up my 200gb as 137 but it works fine in XP.
I also corrupted my files one week in and had to format the whole thing, (i had about 20 dvds ripped to the drive ready to backup) if I had partitioned it I would hav only had to reinstall XP.

I now partitioned with 4GB for the OS.
also it will not show up as 200GB in "my computer" this is normal, i think it is 189GB

Did you remember to partition the rest of the space into another hard drive. (did it myself very annoying)

    What?

I made one partition to fill the drive. That's the way I want it..

fdisk in linux 2.2.26. I was worried about the age of the kernel but i'm assured that it can handle partitions that big.

Also, the drive has some jumper called CS or something, I was also informed that this was just some kind of attempt at "intelligent" master/slave handling -- however i'll remove the jumper from it (since the drives are set up right anyways), after reading what Boro wrote, and see what happens.

my maxtor 200gb has master, slave, cable select and a drive limiter which limits the size of the drive

I don't think it could be a drive limiter thing - the BIOS picks the HD up as having 200 (i think it's actually 203) GB.

if you can get your hands on a copy of partition magic it will be able to tell you where your space has gone.

if only windows 98 would let me boot in! it's already installed on that partition, but it won't boot up because the hardware layout has changed!!

    ****ing anti-piracy madness. absolute cock.

Start it in Safe Mode, should work even if the hardware is different.
