What did you think of SG:1 - Season 8?

Well with it at all over, what did you make of Stargate SG:1 - Season 8? A brilliant, smart season and their best yet? A load of toss that shows why the show should be cancelled? Or somewhere in between?

For me, I thought it was fairly decent for the latter seasons. There was only one bad episode in "Sacrifices", an episode I genuinely have no wish to see again. There was, in fact, a bit of the old "a season of two halves" feel where the first half of the season is weaker than the second. I noticed this patter in Season 7 as well and it stretches right back to Season 1 (where, at least, it's more understandable).

There's been a couple of great episodes this year, principally "Reckoning", although I also highly enjoyed the likes of "Icon", "Gemini", and "Threads" as well as the season opener.

If I had to find a running flaw with the season, it's the abrupt way episodes ended. Instead of getting a climatic battle scene, or somesuch, we'd have it described to us when they cut to after the event. We saw this in "Moebius", "Reckoning", "Prometheus Unbound", etc. I assume it's the fact that the show runs on a small budget and is now competing, somewhat, with SG:A for funds. It did help undermine episodes that could have been standout.

We also got some nice arc progress this year: the System Lords, for all intents and purposes, stopped in their tracks, the Jaffa freed, and the Replicators done (I quite enjoyed RepliCarter).

There was some character time: O'Neill taking new responsibilities and admitting his feelings, Carter's guilt over Replicater and the whole Pete/Jack thing, Daniel's understanding of his ascension and role, and Teal'cs freeing of his people and marrying off Rya'c. Hell even Walter got some good screen time.
OTOH, I missed Hammond. RDA is fun in the role (and got far more screen time than I expected) but Hammond had a nice edge of seriousness. And still would like to have had Dr. Fraiser around.

Overall, I think they did pretty damn well for a show in its eight year. The only other genre show to get this far - 'The X-Files' - was complete muck by now. And with significant cast changes next year, the show may get a new shot in the arm and head for the magical 'Season 10' figure...

I must say, worst season ever, twas just for the most part boring or drawn out, 4 good episodes(first episode , first 2 parter and daniel as half ascended) ... I think it's going to be the first series i won't own on dvd.

This season was more about putting the finishing touches on existing storylines than anything else. Come on, be honest, would you really want to have seen earth under siege by the Gao'uld again? and again?

I liked it, brought an air of finality to the show in many respects. If they wanted to end it there, they could have. But they've also set up some new storylines and ones they mentioned but haven't touched on at all (ie. the Furlings)

The episodes seemed alot slower, that's true, but overall I liked it. They need a new enemy though, the Gao'uld are just pathetic now, it's like "Oh a mothership..*smack*" and then there's the opposite with the replicators "Oh..bugger, run like hell". They need a new enemy that is a threat to them BUT one that isn't completely invincible.

IMHO it was extremely patchy. The last few were probably the strongest of the season. I particularly enjoyed the season finale. A lot of the rest of the episodes contained sloppy writing and were pretty indifferent.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was extremely disappointed with season seven, so I didn't hold out a lot of hope for this one in the beginning. I don't know if that had something to do with it, but I was pleasantly surprised.

What I found unusual was that we've been so used to a climactic season finale with some new threat, and this time we got a much calmer, no-cliffhanger ending. Personally, I have no problem with that, but it was a bit of a departure from the norm. It was pretty obvious that it was written and filmed with the intention of being the final episode ever - some backtracking from the writers needed for next season, no doubt.

I was particularly fond of the episode "Citizen Joe". A lot of people didn't like it at all, but I loved all the in-jokes and the alternative storyline that went with it. There was something 'clever' about it that I kinda related to, and I'd say it was my favourite episode of the whole season. (It had some good competition with the likes of "Reckoning.)

All-in-all, I'm very happy with it. Roll on Season 9.

    Mean... but oh so true.

I have to say I liked Season 8. Had some fantastic eps, then some there to fill in the gaps and some to just take up space :D

But over all, I found each ep to have a funny side to them. Take "Prometheus Unbound." as an example

i enjoyed it, though i've missed season 5 ,6 and 7 so i spent alot of time wondering what was going on, and wondering why t'ealc had hair.
And citizen joe was one of my favourite episodes, i don't know why, i just really liked the constant self-mockery.

I thought it was pretty good overall. Even the slow episodes like the one with Mayborne and Citizen Joe were good as they was quite funny. I thought the final episode was a big let down, it just sort of ended without anything really happening. I know we got our big battle scene in Reckoning but I still felt a bit cheated.

Good season . The first half could have been better with Jack trying to be the dumbest guy on the planet . Thought he stretched that out for far too long. The last 10 episodes really uped the quality and 'The Reckoning' should have been the seasons finale, imho .

It actually wasn't half bad to be honest. I enjoyed the series expecially the episodes with replicator Carter. O'neill was also funny, expecially that episode where the plant grows out of control on the base.

    O'Neill to the scientist "It's a plant!"

    I liked Zero Hour too.

Thought the RepliCarte was one of the worst things they've ever thoguht up.
Worse than all the human form Replicators together.

I thought Sacrifices was awfull and Covenant was a huge let down because I think a story like it had much more potential.

Lost interest after Prometheus Unbound, I thought a couple of episodes after it like Citizen Joe and It's Good to be King were piss, while the grandiose, all-action episodes have become a bit of a parody of themselves. I mean, how many times can you watch SG1 save the entire universe against the odds before it gets silly.

Quite enjoyed Avatar, Covenant and a few others though.

Nope, I rated it highly when it aired. Classic-old school SG1 and Maybourne's always fun. Loved Jack's enthusiasm for going out in the field and his sarky "If I had a dollar.." eye roll when they're surrounded by the locals.

I think I'll have to rewatch this ep but from what I remember I wasn't impressed. And thats sad in a way since I think Maybourne is a great character and loved all his involvment with sg1 over the years.

Over all though, the season was ok. Nothing to write home about and I found myself more excited about Atlantis episodes.
