Your Address. A draft is basically a guaranteed cheque paid for up front at the senders bank

Is there some reason he will not use a direct transfer?
If you can get him to use IBAN/IBIC numbers and do a direct transfer into your account you might be better off, and I think it will cost him less (not 100% on that).

Another advantage is that you know the money has gone in. If he's a conman, and prints off what looks like a Spanish bank draft (do you know what one looks like?), it could be a while before the bank here discover it's a dud.

Be careful. If he tries to pull some kind of "i send you a bank draft for more than the amount, you send me back the change" move, run away cos its a scam.

Under no sircumstances accept a bank draft. You will be ripped off. Give him your bank account number, and he can transfer the funds. It sounds very suspicous that somebody would buy over the internet using a bank draft, and there is a well know scam going around involving them.

Really. You just don't hand anything over untill you have the cash. Same as doing a "cash deal"

Also be careful with forged drafts. They're credited to your account but then debited when they are discovered a few days later (like dodgy cheques).

sounds dodgy, why cant he buy it in spain a country thats many times the size of ireland and prices are lower?
run a mile, tell him to either paypal u the money or use a bank transfer. drafts can be credited and the money taken back later.

The draft could be fine. Tell him he'll have to wait about 2 weeks for the draft to clear. Then you'll post the goods. Ive paid by draft on ebay and had to wait ages for the same reason.

silly question maybe but is it ok to give out bank details like that? have a few things I would like to sell and can't decide what would be the safest way to receive the money?

It's fine to give your bank account number, it just means they can lodge money via credit transfer...but cant withdraw any.
If it's from a foeign bank, there may be a small commision charge...but it wouldnt be a bank if they didnt charge you for the privellage of your money :)

Credit transfer is by far the cheapest option. You get charged €6.35 for each transaction regardless of amount (well in AIB anyway). I've used this a few times and was pretty happy with it, all you need is your banks swift code (ring them to find it out), give it to the guy along with ur bank details and the guy can transfer the funds.

    Dont accept the bank draft!!!

Paypal is secure and anyone with a credit card can use it too.....

Bank drafts are oldfashioned and if he is on the internet then he defo can use that method......

    EDIT to clarify preceding sentence..........

Bank drafts don't go out of date,

A transfer from within the EU to another EU country should only cost 51c if the IBAN details are provided and the payment is done for "two day value".

When paying for goods won on ebay I use the following depending on where the seller is located

    USA: Bank Draft
    UK: Bank Draft
    EU excl UK: Bank Transfer

In all cases the sellers in USA and UK send me the goods straightaway without the needless wait for the draft to "clear"

if the bank draft it for more than the item and he wants you to send the difference .... then its a scam....

right, this guys english aint too good. the item is costing him 85 euros, and he has given me his visa card number, i aint out to rip this guy off, so how can i take the money from his card?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 568 ✭✭✭newgrange

To be fair, he has given you 'a' Visa card number - you really have no way of knowing it is his.

If he goes to a bank, it is standard daily practice for them to do what is in effect an international bank giro (using the IBAN/IBIC number). I would be suspicious if he is avoiding doing this, since it is the easiest and cheapest option, and the one that offers you as the seller most protection.

How has he paid previously on eBay? What is his feedback like?
