Is there one? Where? I remember there being one in Dolphins Barn but it was really small (and kinda crappy).

There was another one I remember too, but iirc it was also small. Where is that and is there not a larger one?

I recently found out is only open for less than 2 months a year.

does the silver skates in Finglas not exist anymore?

    Seemingly not:

All year round ice skating has been frozen out of Dublin for some time now following the closure of the rinks in Phibsboro (Silver Skate) and Dolphins Barn.

There's a full size one open to the public in the RDS during December, but unfortunatly there isn't enough interest/business all year round, so they tend to only open during winter.

How does an ice rink burn down?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,276 ✭✭✭damnyanks

It catches fire and burns down just like any normal place

It does sound a bit odd though, a bit like a swimming pool burning down.

    Seems to happen enough :)

Both places were pretty much full of knackers most of the time. I never got the chance to skate at Dolphins Barn but the one in Phibsborough was a bit of a dump. All the skates they had were terrible quality and the often let the ice melt to save money. There's a full size ice rink up the north, the only one there has ever been in the country as far as I know.

I liked the one in Phisboro, until some scanger thought it'd be funny to kick me in the back of the leg with her blade

Ah iceskating, used to go to the one in phibsboro many moons ago.As other posters have said, these seemed to be always rough and full of knackers. On at least 3 occassions we had to circle the wagons from the local scummers and then there was the "will ya be with me mate" brigade.

I went to the one in Dolphin's Barn years ago, after coming back from a school tour and taking a shine to skating when I visited an Olympic rink in Germany. Talk about contrast! Dolphin's Barn was full of wahs and skangers and there were puddles and lumps everywhere. Complete waste of time.

the best ice-rink i've ever been on is the Wollmann Rink in Central Park, NY- best days to go are mon-thurs (reduced rate and not half as many people on it as a weekend day)

You know what really sucks.. I was in belfast over the weekend. Went up with the oul fella to watch an ice-hockey match (he's canadian and we know one of the players on the opposing team).
Anyway just to clarify, you cannot skate in the odyssey arena, but there is ANOTHER olympic size rink in Belfast called (iirc) the Dundonald rink or something, that's open to the public all year round.

Anyway repeated futile attempts to make my da come skating with me were made. I wasn't too keen to go on my lonesome and capitulated when my da assured me there was a full size rink back in Dublin, but he "couldn't remember" the whereabouts exactly. Hence my starting of this thread when we came back down...

LOL. The Barn was full of cream crackers alright. Smelly skates and blood ingrained into the ice. You couldn't skate fast enough away from the 'will ya be with my mate brigade'. I always wondered how they could harass you, rave and smoke 20 blue while skating around the rink.

Yeah but it had that racing game with the pedal that had no pedal. just the lever bit, was great fun trying to play in the skates.

I think if i had money i would open one.. i mean come on business people.. open your eyes... Look how many people pack into smithfield and RDS at christmas for ice skating!!!

Hell ice hockey would be a sport people would get into.. Its like GAA on ice

Ice hockey is an expensive sport, and there are no suppliers here in Ireland, even when there were two dublin teams. And a hockey rink is a lot bigger than a skating rink, and skating is where the money would be. I used to play ice hockey in phibsborough and we had to play diagonally to make it and good at all.
