How do you get rid of rats?

    Hi,
The buggers have always been there, but due to the cold winter, they're making more frequent "visits" to my backgarden. I know, and seen the holes they come from, but the only thing I can do is to put bricks on top of the holes, but they just dig new holes then.

I can't use rat poisen, as I've a West Higland Terrier, and she would eat it, and even if she didn't, I'd be afraid she'd eat the rat that ate the poisen.

So; any idea's? The only way I can think of is to smoke them out, but if I did, I know they'd be back.

    Thanks,

    the_syco

did anyone see a program on a few nights ago, which was based in New York. They were following around a guy that is a janitor of a school or some government building and it’s infested with rats, he absolutely loves killing them. It showed him snaring one out of its hole using his dog, bangers etc and then chasing the thing and wacking it with a plastic baseball bat!! lol He said he's killed 60,000 so far

Yea, saw that program. Was hilarious, the rat controller (or whatever he was) was afraid of the rats. Why be a rat controller if you're afraid of rats?

The minute she leaves the backdoor, she starts barking, giving anything still there a chance to get away. Also, she's not that fast anyway.

burrows? Are you sure its rats an not moles?
Anyways, there are easier ways to get rid of rats.
If you have a cat, spread her litter box around the garden.
place a lot of pots of mustard around (they hate it)
Pots of vicks vapo rub are great too, and your dog wont touch them believe me.

there are also electronic devices available in most gardening supplies places (I know B&Q sell them) that emitt an ultrasonic noise rats and mice cannot stand.

Hey, must try out spreading the cat litter around the spot the nasty buggers seem to hang out. I think the 2 cats keep most of them rats at bay as they tend to hang out at the same spot too but any little helps :D
That organic stuff sounds good, might get some of that too as next door's farmer has a big foodstuff silo a few feet away.

Behind my house, is a field. Also, the rats come up just after the oil tank.

I know they're rats, as my mom, and my sister saw them. Seemingly, there were about a foot long, or so.

get a good Cat or two, my two have caught countless mice and rats, even quite big ones.

If the other stuff doesn't work you can get a rat trap(more dangerous lookin mouse trap) and put it in a plastic pipe that your dog won't fit into.

Ultrasonic sounds good but might piss you dog off too?

Probably urban myth and not very PC but I was once told this..

Catch three rats and put them in a cage, no food, after a while two will gang up and eat the third. Then in typical highlander style There can be only one one of the last two will eat the other. You now have a cannibal rat which you release back to get rid of the others.

Oh  found this on the intarweb - so it must be true (note the regional variation in the recipe)
    http://www.aglearn.net/riceIPMModule4.html
Here’s one more interesting approach that you might want to evaluate. It is said to be practiced by farmers in Indonesia and is a new twist on the natural enemy approach. Farmers there evidently believe that a “cannibal rat” will keep other rats away from a rice field. Here is their recipe for making a cannibal rat.

    * Place several rats in a large bucket. Place 0.5 cm water in a large bucket for drinking water. Do not give any food. After a couple days, several of the rats should be missing.
    * Wait until there is only one rat left in the bucket. Keep water in the bottom for drinking.
    * When only one rat is left, add one more rat and wait until there is only one rat left.
    * Release the one remaining cannibal rat. It is claimed that other rats in the area will run away.
