Blue screen headache

Got an old Dell 8200 - XP home Sp1,128ram,intel 1.8P4,40gb and it started acting up a few days ago and now its gone skits. Its the family computer and im getting blamed even though i never use it.

It keeps flicking to that lovely blue screen"system shutdown due to software/hardware error" "apati.sys" or some cr*p.
Anyways went playing and got it working for a week or two but now its gone worse. It doesnt recognize the A:,C:,D: drives so presuming its mobo or setup.

Funny thing is leave it for a few hrs and its fine for a while?
Any ideas welcome (dont want to format the C:)

    Nukem

ATAPI sounds like you have a drive problem in the IDE subsystem which controls your hard drive and CD/DVD drive. Probably a hardware issue but try backing up important stuff and re-installing windows first.

Ya think il have to reinstall everything. I ran a scan on the mobo config and got an error on the IDE controller i pray when i reinstall and upgrade it that will fix it. Will check later.

    Thanks

Does XP have an "upgrade" option like Win2K, whereby it does a full reinstall, but keeps your old registry, etc?

Or get Knoppix, and see if it can see your stuff. If it can't, it may be a hardware fault.

check ide cables - check psu is capable of powering up everything fully (remove any hardware and usb devices you dont need)

if ide is faulty - ide controller can be replaced for about 10 to 20 euros - slot it in and disable the onboard one. Replacing IDE on XP Home will necessate a refresh install of XP - it will fix up xp for the new ide but will keep all your stuff, programs, registry etc, if you tell it to while reinstalling.

    “Roll it back”
