The last few days myself and my brother have been hit hard by hard disk problems:

Firstly, my brother's 80GB IBM disk just cut out unexpectedly and wouldn't spin up anymore. He eventually managed to get it going and backed up the data.
Then a few days ago my PC crashed with a BSOD (MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION) and since then one of my hard disks is occasionally detected as garbled characters in the BIOS. Now my other disk has started giving bother, it won't calibrate properly. I made an attempt to back up the data to an 80GB WD Caviar drive, it succeeded, but when I tried to boot off the 80GB drive I got another MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION BSOD and I heard the disk recalibrate itself just beforehand!

How could four hard disks start giving problems in such a short space of time? My suspicion is an electrical issue. There was an explosion at an electricity substation in Listowel about two weeks ago and since then the power has been cut off about seven times! My PC was never on when it happened, but I'm thinking that the power might be "dirty".

What am I going to do? Seems like I'll have to replace my disks, preferably with a new one. Can anyone make sense of all this?
