We weren't interviewed for it in my school, pretty much everybody did it. I've never heard of them interviewing people for it before though.
Whether transition year is worth it or not really depends on how good the programme offered by your school is, and what type of person you are. In some school it is quite definitely a waste of time, because there's no proper structure and you basically just faff around for a year and get to go home early a lot. However, if they have a well-structured programme that seems to be full of exciting and interesting stuff, then it might well be worth it. Enthusiastic teachers are definitely a help too.
If you are the type of person that is good at independent work and motivating yourself when you're actually interested in something, then transition year would probably be invaluable. However, if you have a lazy streak, its quite possible that it will be encouraged - it sure encouraged mine! Going into fifth year and suddenly having heaps of work was a bit of a shock to my system. However, if I had the choice again I'd still do transition year
Its a total cliche, but it really is what you make of it

  • it all depends on the school, our school did meaningful ground-work in TY, allowed you to have a glimpse of Leaving Cert subjects you wouldn't have considered before. Also i think that the majority of people just finishing their Junior Cert aren't really mature enough to deal with the workload that 5th year is, and if you don't put it in in 5th it makes 6th year much more hassle.

That does seem like a pretty good plan... Ooh, I'd love to do woodwork! If you think it would suit you, then I say go for it - I don't know what kinda stuff they'll ask you in the interview, but I'm sure if you sound enthusiastic and show them that you'd b good at it, you'll have no problem. How many people are going for how many places?

Work experience rocks chairs btw - if you do get into TY, organise your work experience as early as possible, cos the good places tend to go fast!

lol they said that in my school, first day back we (royal we) accidential put a hole through the wall, covered it up with lockers.

all school say that it's a strict year because of the general consensist of 4th year being a "dos year"

i'm really happy i done it, it was a good break. the only thing i had against it was i found it a little hard in fifth year to get back to work.

Solitaryman666, you wouldn't believe how much that rocks that you get to do taekwondo as a subject!
I did Transition Year (1999/2000), and I wasn't a fan. I just felt like I was wasting my time for the whole year. My school did some ridiculous things, like forcing everyone in the year to be part of a musical, and childcare classes. Work experience was interesting enough (I did it in a primary school, just confirmed to me that I HATE children). Definitely not enough computery stuff (anything we did was of the type 'this is how to send an e-mail', doing some webdesign or basic Java would have been cool). To be honest, given the choice again, I would have skipped TY and taken a year out after the LC.

It,ll be good if you have the concentration and enjoy school but do you really want to have to stay in school for another year. i have friends that done it and they thought it would be really good for them but they dread to think that they still have another year and a bit in school and a good few of them have dropped out and a few more are talking bout it. i suppose it also depends on what your friends are doing, cause if the majority of them are doin it you should be grand cause ye'll be together but if their not it'll be really annoying for you cause when they talking bout college and stuff you'll be thinking bout the L.C!

    hey,
I did transition year and it ROCKED, but I really think it depends on the school. In my school it's compulsory so there was loads to do as well as doing all your basic subjects, also it brings your year a lot closer together, for example, if you are in modules with people you didn't really know before and who may turn out to be dead on. On the "getting back into fifth year" thing - its a bit of a push but you will do it eventually, neway, I couldn't have imagined going straight into fifth year after the JC.
Only you really know yourself if you will be able to get back to working again, but I would def recommend it! also i what someone else said about getting involved in stuff is so true - if you are going to do it you have to throw yourself into it to get real value from it.
Hope that helped! ask if nemore questions

    :)

thats one of the biggest issues with doing fourth year, i havent really gotten back into it fully yet tbh, but its not really too different to when you started study for the first time

sounds very corny, but 4th year was kick ass for me because it made me realise what type of person i am and i made alot of new friends, definately worth it. yes it is a doss, but would you rather be doing maths? think about it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 352 ✭✭Egyptian

    4th year is a good laugh!! :D

theres pros and cons thow,

you'll hardly do any work during the year besides a little work experience, and just have a good time!!!

the only con is, when you come back for 5th year, man is that harsh!!
after 4th year i had great memories..................not of what i learned from 1st to 3rd year thow!!!!!!

id say you'll do better in your school work if you give 4th year a miss, but then again you may regret not doing it!!!!!

true its a big decision, but ultimetly its up to you............................. ;)

I did 4th year and had a great time.

It was a really laid back year, and I met the majority of people I'm still friends with today in 4th year.

I'd definitely recommend it based on my experience.

fourth year can be the most boring thing ever conceived, id recommend getting a job or taking up a hobby or two or anything to keep you busy and or amused

It's compulsory in my school, it was good and I'd say worth doing. But there was a hell of a lot of assignments due for classes that you probably wouldn't be doing in 5th year so it was kinda a waste of time in that sense. However there was a week of outdoor pursuits (a kinda camping trip) that everyone enjoyed, bonding days, work experience, mock job interviews and such. You can't just decide whether transition year is worth it or not, it depends on your school. It is a good break from work, but then it's harder to get back into work in 5th year.

Ugh, that's so annoying that they're asking for your mock results. You said there's an interview - you can try convince them in the interview that you're aware you didn't perform as well as you could have in the mocks, and that you're going to move your studying up a gear. Or, even better, that you already have started working harder (teachers love initiative, and its an advantage in transition year)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,190 ✭✭✭Dublinstiofán

ye they will only ask easy questions. Transition varies from school to school ask somebody that is doin it this year what they thing and make your own mind up about it in the end dont let anybody else do it for ya. I did transition and it was the best year i ever had in school.
Hope ya make the right choice

I did transition year, I didn't like it that much at the time, there was a lot of project work and so on which I found hard, but I am glad I did it. It really helps now, I got a good idea of the subjects and it helped so much with my english! I'd be hopeless now if i hadn't done it!

Our school apparently had an interview (I wasn't there then) but apparently it was alright.

    Good luck chooseing.

Dude unless you plan on getting stoned off your head everyday, don't even think about TY. Everyone, without exception who does TY in my school turns into a total stoner during TY. Its just soo fcuking boring. TBH your better off going straight into 4th year and getting out as quickly as possible.
