    Attention Broadband Gurus!!

Was helping a friend switch from a netopia to an SMC router but failed miserably. He's an existing Eircom BB user happily working away with netopia router but decided to get an SMC BB router to add wireless to his network.

    model: SMC2804WBRP-G
Set up SMC router and ran PPPoe wizard on router gui but failed to connect to Eircom. Spoke with x-Eircom buddy who advised i needed to set VCI/VPI but there was no option for this on router.

Tried connecting with Eircom I-stream software (website specifies it only supports netopia and Zycel) , XP wizard for PPPoe and RASPPPoE but failed in all attempts. Ended up keeping Netopia in place and using SMC as a switch for the wireless traffic.

Just wondering if anyone has had similar problem or know a fix.

    thanks

After looking on google, this does not seem to be an adsl router.
this means it does not have a built in modem and therefore can only be used as a switch or router for your wireless network.

That would explain it alright but it claims to be a "broadband router"

"2.4GHz 54 Mbps Wireless Cable/DSL Broadband Router with USB Print Server "

It's a router, it does not have a modem built in.

Set the Netopia up as a Bridge in the menu for it (192.168.1.1 I think)
Connect the modem to the WAN/DSL port on the router.
Set up the Router to PPPoE, enter your details (User/Pass)

I do this with a dlink "modem" and you're router. Very stable.
