Not unless your PC's BIOS has an option to boot from external USB drives.
Or you could take the drive out of the bay and put it into a PC and perhaps then use the case for an normal IDE hdd.

Slow day didn't think to check the BIOS :) Looks like it should do the job so

Just FYI, you could get an NEC 3520A with a USB2 5.25" external enclosure for €90 delivered from SVP.co.uk.

And you can get a load of dirt cheap blanks and cases there and the post will remain the same.
I got blank dvd-r 8speed for about 27 cent each

What you think of this, seems an excellent price?

Did anyone pick up one of these? If so what make is the drive?

svp.co.uk are cheap alright, but the Aldi one is dual-layer, 16x, and has firewire AND USB2.0. Also the svp housings are fugly, this one goes much better with my iMac :-)
I already have a DVD burner in it, but it only does DVD-Rs. I'm tempted..
If I do grab one, I'll let you know how it goes on my PC and my Mac.

depends on the drive in the aldi one.
    anyone know what it is?

the nec 3520 is an amzing drive, one of the fastest on the market so id recommend that against an unknow one.

BNC - you happy with the drive?

Haven't had a chance to use the drive yet but am happy with it so far. All the connections are included in the box ie. usb cable firewire cable (even the adapter to convert the firewire to the smaller connection type). Nero Oem Suite 1 is budled with the drive. Its also extremely quiet. Looking at some reviews on this drive it also burns dual layer discs at 5x.

Have to get some media now :)

    Picked one up this morning.

Just burnt a full disc of mp3's. Very quick at burning and yes very quite.
The external housing looks like something off a star trek set :D

I'm sure there's a simple answer+fix to this. Ever since I plugged this unit into my laptop the "on board" dvd burner has gone from "my computer list"
It was my D: drive. Now the new one is E: drive.

How can I keep my D: drive active the next time I hook the new burner up??
How do I restore my D: drive??

Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom. :)

ok, this is really starting to piss me off. Why wont my burner burn onto the disks? iv tried both DVD-R and DVD+R, is it the make of the DVDs? its Mr.DVD. it keeps coming up "your complitation cannot be written on this type of disk" when ever i try to burn it. is anyone else having this trouble? any idea what do i do?

Sounds like you're trying to burn a DVD9 size to a DVD5... ie check the size of the compilation and make sure it isn't more than 4gb just as a test and then try to burn. It's a dual layer burner so it will allow you to burn more than 4gb, assuming you have DL media.

Well if the demand was anything like Aldi in Tallaght,I doubt it.
Even old ladies were buying them.(no offence to any old ladies on Boards :D )
As for my original problem with my D: drive going AWOL it sorted itself out. I don't think my D: and E: drive got on at first but they're good friends now.

Zhane, I haven't burnt any DVDs yet but I did find when burning mp3s at max speed to cd-r certain albums just skipped all other the shop. Burnt at x8 and all was fine. Don't know if that was down to the burner or the media used.(memorex cd-r).
I'd agree with the others that said it sounds like you're trying to put a dual layer dvd film onto a normal dvd disc.
If I run into trouble burning DVDs I'll post the details.
