    Hi All, been looking at my Dad's pc with a view to connecting him to the internet, it's a Win95 P1 as far as I can remember with 64mb ram. The modem slot is an ISA slot but haven't seen any offered anywhere. Anyone know where I can pick one up? And before it's suggested I already told him to chuck the whole thing out and upgrade to something a bit more decent, he's actually quite happy with it though, the only extra thing he wants is to send emails.

    Cheers

    Damo

    You say the modem slot is ISA... does it have PCI slots at all? You could just throw a PCI modem in there and ignore the ISA slot altogether...

    p.s. tell him to chuck it out :D

    I'd suggest ebay for this. You wont find an ISA modem in any shop worth its salt :)

    <edit>
    Totally in agreement with keeping the old machine though. Most dads (myself excluded ;)) don't need anything more than a P1 with 64megs for their day to day stuff.

    Just get an external one, problem solved (and some potential problems getting an ISA modem to work avoided too).

    Was hoping to avoid going external as don't want to panic him with new periperals, also look a fair bit more expensive than an internal, no pci slots by the way, I found out by buying him a new modem card and was fairly non plussed to discover just how old this machine was when I took the cover off :rolleyes: . Thought someone may know of a place that I might be able to pick an ISA card up at. Ah well, he's off travelling the globe for the next 6 months to celebrate retirement so with any luck when he comes back he'll be fairly conversant with modern pc's from internet cafes so maybe he'll go for one that at least supports pci ;)

    In my opinion, external devices tend to be more user friendly over their internal counterparts. If device misbehaves then detach. I used a couple of ISA modems over the years and the grief was unbearable. A combination of an old PC and Windows 95/98 together with ISA = nightmare memories. Dip switches, IRQ's, I/O ports.

    Pick up a €30 external yoke from somewhere. Could have sworn I saw brown-box modems in Maplin for this price. Also look over at No Waffle Computers. They've got an ISA modem for €25 + P&P. They've got an external one for €30 too.
