Will drugs show in a medical?

    Hello everyone.

Have a bit of a problem.

First of all, this isnt something I am into doing regularly - maybe once a month or even longer and at that its just a few quick puffs.

Was having a few puffs on a joint yesterday-last time I smoked was about 3 weeks before that and again was just a few puffs.

The question i have is, if you were to do a medical for a company, would it show up? How long would it take to get out of your system and also how could I get rid of it faster?

Needless to say, I have learnt a lesson and will not be smoking that stuff again.

This is one of those very hazy areas. Do you know what the physical will entail? Supposedly it stays in blood quite abit longer than urine.

Very much doubt it, unless they specifically look.

One time, as a much more wreckless youth, I went out all night on various substances and went straight to a medical the following morning for a job with a Major US computer company. Got the job despite low hanging jaw and massive pupils.

What does the realease form you sign before the medical say?

Probably. Of course there are probably tolerences for this type of thing. Most companies doing these test are more interested in your general health (will you be off sick), life expectancy (will you die early, how much will your pension cost) and abuse of alcohol, opiates and stimulants.
How long would it take to get out of your system
I understand cannabis can take up to four-six months to completely clear your system.

Exercise, good diet, lots of water (not on the day, they copped that one a long time ago).

I'm not sure if you have ....

yeah i heard that four to six months thing as well. But, I also heard that a week tops for # and weed in a general examination. its only four to six months if the person performing the exam is looking specifically for drugs in your system.

yes, thats true. I doubt that they will take bloods, though. Most companies are lenient about soft drugs, unless you have an obvious hardcore heroin addiction or something!

Depends on the medical. If they're drug testing and going for a urine sample, then they are testing for drugs so yes you're in trouble.

Theres a couple of options. You could google it, theres foodstuffs you can take. Alternatively, if you're being honest and can we trust a drug addled hippy like yourself :D and it was just a few tokes, and you have a few days, i'd recommend drinking 12-14 litres of water a day, and a couple of trips the sauna. You'll sweat alot of the impurities out of your system.

    Alternatively do a withnail/grateful dead/american beauty

Uh huh. You realise they're not reading this post right?

depends on the responsibility they plan on bestowing you. they dont want a half-blind truck driver now do they.

some companies do urine samples, and some dont. I know dell computer take urine samples and thats for a 8.50 an hour production line job a trained monkey could do. canibis can show up on this for several weeks.

it would be worse for you if you were hired and then given the bullet when your results came back.

If it's part of a company standard medical, then I wouldn't really worry about it. It might show up, but if you were just smoking the happy smokes, they're not going to care. The test is mostly to check your overall physical health for any existing conditions they should know about (like diseases, or if you have back problems that you might need adjustments for - like a proper chair), and for your health insurance. I doubt they're going to care about a little bit of cannabis.

Of course, it depends on the job, you're not applying to be a guard are you

Jesus if you're doing pills wait 6 months to a year before you donate blood if at all. Image the effect that could have on a seriously ill patient.

Don't know the exact figure and would depend on your body mass but drinking too much water can dilute the sodium levels in your blood and cause your brain to either shrink or expand (can't remember which but either way YOU DIE)

    Be careful with that one

    FYI-

When joining the civil service I signed a disclaimer allowing my employers to take samples (urine, blood or hair samples) for random drug testing purposes. This was 2 years ago. I've never been tested, and doubt I ever will be, unless I started acting in a totally irrational manner on work time (surfing the web and replying to PMs and e-mails isn't classed as irrational thankfully.....)

Whatever about blood and urine- it can take a hell of a lot longer for your history of drug testing to vanish from your hair samples!

    Thanks for the replies.

I am 25yrs old, I have smoked hash about 5 times in my life-it is definately not a regular thing.

I am due to have some interviews soon for jobs. While taking a drag out of the joint the other night, it hit me that if I do get the job, these days they do ask for urine/blood samples.

For me personally, smoking that sh*t is not worth it and I will not be doing it again.

So if its hash, a week might do it? (have drank 2 liters of water already today).

I would be devastated if i got the job i really wanted only for that mistake to f it up.

If it does show up on the test, and they say it to you - just tell them what you've said here. You don't intend smoking it again, and are willing to take random tests if it means securing the job you really want.

A few blasts on a joint isn't going to do anyone any harm [1]

THC will stay in your bloodstream for a while, but you can always clain it wwas from passive smoking or that you have chronic back pain or something.

Put it this way, you'd be a lot worse off if you were a heavey drinker / alcoholic / into unprotected sex / anal sex / smack / crack / violence...

    Shall I go on?

as regards masking - google is your friend

No it's 4-6 months because your body stores it in fat and excretes it in hair (among others).

Of course there is the matter of "what level is it detectable at?"

Take precautions but keep your mouth shut about the drugs
A guy i know didnt get a job because he admitted to having a few spliffs at the medical.(i.e they didn't even test him but he was so paranoid that he felt the need to mention it)
usually the medical means that youve got the job & they just wanna check that you wont drop dead in your first week.
if they are testing for drugs specifically then you can be sure that the company wont tolerate any level of drug abuse.
They wont want undesirables like you going slowly insane & preaching communism to his fellow workers trying to get em hooked on the evil dope.
so find out how best to cover up!!

If by any chance you DO have to do a medical (keep in mind you haven't even gone for an interview yet!!!), if something IS mentioned then just say you were on holiday in Amsterdam in the last few months!

there'd be nowt they could say or do!

As an aside point, if you're this freaked about a few tokes a few weeks ago and a medical that might not even happen, i think it'd be best to stay well clear of any smokeables for the time being!

best of luck on the job hunt btw!

i had to take a medical for a company a few years back and it was partialy to test for drugs as well as general health. i used to smoke like a chimney at the time, i'd even had a few joints that day and all they had to say about my blood was that i had an iron deficiency :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,316 ✭✭✭✭the_syco

With hash, its 4 weeks. Another 6 months or so for it to dissappear from your hair, etc, tho. The "4 weeks" I think is just for the general tests, etc, such as piss on the piece of paper (how I was tested for drugs in the FCA), and also for a few other "light" tests.
Most companies won't go to far, unless your going for a very highly "respectable" job, and then its just to ensure that you won't scare away the clients, or that you won't spend all your cash on hard drugs.
If its an American company, or an international company, go by the 6 month rule. Most of them use external agencies, who look for all the sh|t, whereas some of the Irish companies only ask you for a drugs test if you come into work stoned more than twice  at which point your asking for it.
