Whats with people when sitting down constantly have one of their legs hopping up and down?

Why do people do this? I do it and i just want to know as somebody once told me it from stress??

    nervous energy

    I'd say excess energy.

    Moved from PI.

It's from conflicting nerve signals coming from your foot and your upper leg. Try placing your foot flat on the ground.

I dont bob my foot up and down, i just move it. I just cant sit still, studying in the library in college is a pain as it's very hard for me to sit there for longer than 30 mins.......Iim just really restless and have to walk about

That sounds like a build up of fluid in the knee.

I sat beside a guy in school who used to do that all the time. It made the desk shake he was so bad, it was like he had Parkinson's or something.

I always thought people do it because they feel the need to be doing something, not because of some kind of nervous dissposition. If you want to stop doing it, you probably can easily.

It's not an involuntary action is it?

I was doing it as I opened that thread. I'm pretty bad for it, but some of my mates are worse. I never notice I'm doing it untill someone points it out, or tells me to stop...

Moving your legs helps blood circulation (note that often military people or people in the scouts etc. who could walk or even run for a long time without much fatigue will faint when standing to attention). Because of this people will feel the need to move their legs occasionally while sitting or standing. It can then develop into a "nervous habit".

I am guilty of doing it alot aswell!I dont think its a nervous twitch at all really!Started out doing it when id be thinking of a song in my head and and leg will go up and down as if playing the drums along to it!
Now its either that or im doing it and dont realise!

i do it a lot. my girlf is always stopping me when we're sitting on the couch....it's involuntary in my case, don't even know I'm doing it... she also says i do it more when i'm happy so she can guage my mood. like a dog wagging it's tail methinks. :(
i think it's fair to say that i'm always fidgeting when I'm sitting down - probably would rather be up and doing something...

I do it too sometimes, if my leg is in that position. Other times, I'm a demon for tapping my feet and bobbing my head along to some imaginary tune in my head.

I'm perfectly aware I'm doing it, it's not involuntary, rather subconcious.

Nearly every guy I know does this, but no girls do, it can get really irritating

    seek medical advice immediately!
chances are you'll have to have your leg amputated

have to correct you there my girlfriend is always at it cant sit beside her with everything shaking can get a bit annoying. It does have to do with nervous energy and most people dont realise they are doing it.I guess it has a bit to do with stress too because my gf is always stressed for absolutely no reason so this maybe has something to do with it too

I do it, I'm just fidgety and find it difficult to sit still, I'm perfectly aware that I do it and only do it if I'm sitting on my own or whatever.

I tend to slag people about it, I blame it on sexual frustration. (for them ... not me ... Obviously)

I do it, its a subconcious thing, you do it when you dont want to be where you are, or if your bored and your body is looking to use up energy

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,842 ✭✭✭steveland?

Ha, that's funny, just as I was reading this my sister came up to tell me to shut up cos i had been tapping along to Sublime and it's echoed through the floorboards and stuff..

Also apparently it comes from a build up of energy and/or sexual frustration

I read the thread title as "Leg humping", needless to say I'm disappointed.

Before I opened this thread I thought it was going to be about that game kid’s play where they lie down on the grass, side to side and some other kid takes a running jump and tries to jump over them. I used to hate being near the end of the line because I always had the feeling they were going to land on my stomach or worse kick me in the balls. It was a great game if you were the kid doing the running jump.

OMG!!! I had forgotten all about that game! And yeah, being at the end was terrifying!

    Pfft, running jump.
We used to do it with bikes and makeshift ramps made out of a piece of timber and two bricks. So dangerous, yet I don't remember anyone ever being landed on.
