Can't play DRM protected file

I took my first venture into legal music today at mycokemusic.com and downloaded a song which has been rare on the illegal file sharing networks.

Fair enough, the download succeeded, I have the file. But I can't play it. I get the following message in WMP 10:

"A security upgrade is required to play this file. Do you want to download this upgrade?"

If I click Yes it immediately pops up an error:

"Unable to contact the server for the requested operation."

    Error code C00D2762

I'm connected to the internet, but it seems that WMP isn't even trying to download the upgrade, its just failing immediately. I can't find any information on what this error means.

What can be done? Is it just not playable at all?

It's mentioned on MS Windows Media Newsgroup but no resolution

It does say there that WMP 9 and 10 have this problem and WMP 8 works fine

I guess it's up to you if you want to go back to WMP 8

    Here's the link anyway

Well I have a slipstreamed SP2 install and can't go back to WMP 8 without wiping the machine, which isn't really an option for me.

This DRM rubbish will be the death of me.

I just tried it on my sister's PC, which is Windows XP RTM with no updates whatsoever, lol. WMP 8 successfully downloaded the licence and played the song. Cool.

Thanks for that. Makes me wonder if having the latest versions of software is really a good thing???

You could try installing the klite codec pack. Tends to have everything.

or go to start run and type mplayer2

I've been using WMP 6.4 as my main player for years, but it can't handle any recent DRM material. I don't think the codec pack would help since the right codec is installed, but the file is encrypted with a licence.

    Doesn't matter anyway, I converted it to MP3. :D

Anyone know of any way to convert those DRM'd coke WMA's to MP3? I want to play 'em on my ipod which doesn't do WMA.
I get a sneaking suspicion that I won't be able to do this without doing some kind of burn to cd/rip mp3 from CD ****e.

The only way I could do it was loopback, basically record what was playing. You have to do it right though, otherwise it will sound terrible. Burn to CD/rip to MP3 will work also, but its an annoyance. If you go that route, use a CD-RW to save yourself a disc.

Neither of those appear to work for WMP9/10 DRM :/

    But this did! : http://www.tech-recipes.com/windows_tips832.html

stephen, rather than burn the cds,
    burn virtaul images with alcohol120%,
mount the images back onto the drive and rip to mp3.
should be a lot quicker than burning discs.
