Hope that this is the right place, mods feel free to move if not.

I'm doing a pub quiz to help one of our underfunded prinary schools. I'm doing a music round with 30 to 60 second clips of tracks and then getting answers on the music. I have all the tracks on my laptop and have no difficulty burning them to a cd, however I only want to use 30 seconds or so of each track and don't know how to cut this much out. (using the full track would mean the round lasting anything from 15 to 20 minutes)

I've a choice of using win2k or xp & windows media player.

    Any takers?

    Thanks in adv.

    a) Use Sound Forge to cut them (that costs money, tho). Easy to use.

    b) Use Audcity http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ Its free. Kind of easy to use. (I say kinda, as I only used it once, to ensure it works for your purpose) was able to open file, select first 30 seconds, create new file, and paste the copied the 30 seconds, and then was able to save and play the saved file.

I recommend b, as its free, and it'll suit your needs. Its 2.4MB big, so its not that big a download.

Actually you can open the mp3 in notepad and just delete a load of those characters there, save it and it will take away whatever part you deleted. Might want to make a copy of your files before you do it. Oh and it makes the mp3 have a kinda squiggly sound to it..

    (squiggly?!?!..meh...)

The only thing is that Audacity will not edit .wma files, so make sure you rip in either .wav or .mp3 first.

Other than that, it's the job.

Yes , I tried last night. How do you convert .wma to mp3? All mine are wma.

You could use the following trial converter. You only have 7 conversions but maybe that's all you need. It converts wma. to mp3. or wav.

you could open sound recorder and start recording while you play the sould you want with windows media player.then save it as a wav file.
if your doing this you'd have to go into volume control > options > properties > recording control
ensure the wave out mix is selected and put the volume bar of that at around 25%
