I'm thinking of taking this on as as a DIY self challenge kind of thing and would like to avoid getting ripped off for material.
So where's the place to go for the material?

Experience has taught me that if you can buy it in Woodies, you can buy it for a fraction of the price somewhere else. I heard of a place in Wicklow but I can't remember where or what its called.

Anyone have an idea of prices?

    Cheers

by the way, preferably Dublin or surrounding areas!

Try Ganleys of Athlone, got my materials there for a great price.

They do deliver however if you are looking to get it delivered to Dublin then there might be a charge.

I wouldn't mind finding out about this too.
B&Q and woodies are all i've seen so far and they're not cheap.

Good one viking. First quote was €10.16 per 4.8m length but they will do a better price than that as well.

Brooks are also doing 5.1m lengths for €12.90

For the record woodies are charging €13.99 for 3.6m lengths

There may be VAT on that price so factor that in if you haven't already...

Be sure you're comparing apples with apples. There are many rooms in the mansion called 'decking'. A really good decking could cost quite a bit more than the prices you are mentioning. It all depends what you want.

I'm not saying that the highest priced item is the best, of course.

Mc Mahons Blanchardstown should have pre treated, or Brooks Thomas or T.J O' Mahony & Sons Ballymount all in the phone book.

Yeah, any quotes I got are for soft wood. The hardwood prices are a fair bit heftier.

Cheers rooferPete. Will follow up on those as well.

    Hi,
Dont forget depending on whether you buy softwood or hardwood for your decking, your construction methods may differ slightly. For instance softwood decking could be installed with a ring shank nailer , whereas teak decking would be screwed. So if it is a test project for you, do your research on the net, and happy decking. :):)

I'd be cautious about buying any cheap decking material, afterall, decks demand regular maintenance otherwise they will deteriorate quite rapidly and become treacherously slippy and dangerous for very young and old people alike.

Essentially 2 materials to choose from (Pressure Treated Scandinavian Pine and Hardwood such as Cedar). There are others but avoid any type of budget board, simply wasting your money.

Decking should be used in open, bright sunny aspects of the garden. Avoid placing a deck in an area that may be prone to persistent shade and dampness in the winter time.

Good source for decking materials: Clonee Sawmills, expect to pay around
    €3.00 per linear m (125mm x 35mm) for a Ridged Board.

I would recommend Abwood in Newcastle, Co. Wicklow.

Decent enough prices and helpful staff.

Bought my decking material off them myself.

One bit of advice on decking, get good screws .. I had to rescrew all my deck this year as heads popped off sone of original fixings making boards loose n dangerous . Took an age and wouldnt wish on anyone. Have noticed that many suppliers concentrate on good quality timber n cheap far eastern fixings .
Used Spax deck screws this time. Thread under heads clamp boards. No splitting etc etc just keep it in mind..
