OK I hope you all can help with your knowledge of computers!

I am running Windows XP Home on Dell Dimension 8400. It has a DVD-ROM and a DVD-R/RW. And here arises(sp?) the problem. The R/RW (E:/) is not turning up. The desktop shortcut has a red question mark on it and whenever i click on it this pops up
The drive or network connection that the shortcut 'Shortcut to RW Drive.lnk' refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the disk is properly insertedor the network resource is available, and then try again

This just randomly happened. I don't know why. could it be malware? any help would be appreciated. Thank you

    Few things here :

Does the link to this drive work in 'my computer' ? Or is it just the shortcut on your desktop that could somehow be corrupted.

Could just be a loose connection , whereby just check the cabling.

Did you check your system properties to see if it is there ?

Does the drive have power? (ie when you hit the open button - does it open the drive?)
If it has power, and still doesnt work from windows, do as Chopster said. Check the drive from 'My Computer'. Then check to see the cables havent come loose from the drive itself. Then, you could try going to your Device Manager and check if its there.
After that, you could remove the IDE controller from the device manager and reinstall/refresh it which might pick up the drive again.

Probably a buggy shortcut or loose connection though.
