    Hi ,

i just bought a 12 inch ibook with an inbuilt Airport card . My question is as follows , Is the airport card compatiable with all 802.11 b/g base stations such as netgear ,belkin etc or do i need to use a Airport base station .

I m pretty sure i can but its just that i ve been to a Few Wi-Fi enabled Mcdonalds and been in the Ifsc in town (a wi-fi haven) and have gotten no signal on the airport......

I downloaded KisMac ( wireless sniffer) and have gotten no signal anywhere
    either

Just for the record I Dont have a base station of anykind at home .....

    Cheers

hi, it doesn't need an Airport Base Station to work, should work with any standard WiFi kit configured to let you access it, have used mine in the various BitBuzz locations in town with no problems (and always got on on any Hotspot I tried while travelling around)

using KisMac can disable the networking capability of the Airport card though (passive mode)... best to just use the Airport menu to find any (open) hotspots or the likes of MacStumbler

p.s. and make sure you have DHCP set when using a HotSpot, or you know the correct IP and security configs for the network you are joining

Just to confirm - I have a 12" iBook, with an airport card - and I use a Belkin Wireless Router / ADSL modem, with no problems whatsoever.

I got the same Ibook as you if its a new one, make sure you have Wireless turned on btw. MacStumbler is the way to go. Switch it on and go for a drive around town, then u can call yourself hardcore.
