Ok can someone clear this up for me.. about 2 weeks ago, i walk up to an atm to take out 20e.. i didn't think i had that much in the bank at the time tbh and i didn't really wanna take out ANY money let alone 20, but i had to..

anyway, i receive my money and take the receipt, i look at it and see that i had about 150 more than i should have had,, i was like 'cool!!', so i walk off happy.. now i'm usually carefull with my money, i usually buy stuff i want with credit card and keep the money in the bank to pay it off.. over the last month or two my CC bills have been rather high because of stuff i've needed.. but i think i'm grand because i have enough in the bank to cover it.. all's well and good.. HOWEVER!

i get my bank statement today and see that i'm overdrawn by a few hundred euro!!!!

so i think to myself how the **** did that happen!!!!! i try and think back and i remember the above situation, i just thought i had more in the bank then i thought i had, but now i'm thinkin it was actually the overdraft on that receipt, but shouldn't it have said '- xxx' rather than just 'xxx' as the balance? i mean that's just fúckin misleading.. WTF!! What can i do, can i do anythin?

*edit* i also have the CC to pay off in a few weeks which i won't be able to pay because of this, plus i have 2 birthdays this week alone that i can't pay for(presents) and i'm not paid for another 2 weeks!!!

You wont be able to do a single thing other than pay the debts back, my account does this also.

would i be right in assuming that my atm receipt should have said - x amount? cos i'm certain it didn't!

I was with BOI til recently, if I was overdrawn my ATM receipt would say xOD e.g. €100 overdrawn was 100OD

It should say OD after the ballance if you're overdrawn. Though, if you haven't arranged an overdraft facility then you shouldn't have been able to withdraw the €20 in the first place. Maybe you have an overdraft that you've forgotten about? On banking365 online a button for pre-approved loans recently appeared. Apparantly I'm pre-approved for a €3000 overdraft  I've put the button image location into Adblock so the temptation to press it is gone.

Of course, BOI will overdraw your current account to pay direct debits and so on though even if you don't have an overdraft. They've done that to me a few times, and they do charge for it aswell.

i have an overdraft in place, only so it will cover the CC debit each month in case i don't have enough in it to cover myself.. afaik you're not charged for this which is why i did it in the first place.. i never intended on takin money out if i didn't have it in the first place.. this is my point, i wouldnt be overdrawn if i knew how much i REALLY had in the first place, but because i thought i had enough money in the bank i continued to take it out..

its your own fault tbh. you should know roughly how much money you have in your accounts anyway.

It could be their mistak, eg. put money into your A/C yb accident and removed it the next day. It happens. Although nothing is ever said ;)

    Your bank can list your balance in a number of ways;

€88 OD if you're overdrawn, or

    Credit available: €195.

The second one would mean you're €5 overdrawn if you have a €200 overdraft facility.

If you know you have an overdraft limit on your account, and your receipt reads "credit available", it's up to you to do the sums.

do a print balance on it now, there's a good chance it did say 150 OD and you just didn't notice, no reason why you would if it hadn't happened before

I had an OD with BOI up to a few months ago an i used always be dead confused with the ATM receipts sometimes it would say like 200OD and others would just say 200 an id be like wou extra money but it`d actually be my overdraft , was happy the day i closed it off .

a mini statement balance shows transactions up until the previous day therefore the balance quoted on it is the previous day's closing balance. It does not take into account ATM withdrawals made that day whereas an "available balance" is the up-to-the-minute one.

By the way - you don't have a leg to stand on.
Blaming the bank for your inability to manage your own finances is the easy option.

But by all means contact BOI about it.
I hope their responses are of the useless and unhelpful automated variety - just like the ones one gets when complaining to Ebay.

I think you'll find some disclaimers lying around that say your bank statement is the only accurate snapshot of your account. Internet balances and balances from ATMs are free to be inaccurate because they don't reflect all payments gone through before x date.

MAJDs example is also quite good; Credit Available would be very misleading. Most people would probably miss that.

I keep track using online banking, so I'm pretty sure how much I have in the bank most of the time.

Off topic I know, but is Banking 365 down at present?

I know AIB have cr xxx if you have money and db xxx if you are overdrawn.

Why not give their customer service a shout. Just explain to them what happened, get their interpretation. Are you set up on online banking? Thats a very handy way of keeping track..

awww poor baby.. i actually like automated replies;)

you can say whatever about not being able to manage my finances, cos you obviously DIDN'T understand what i said in the first place:rolleyes: i wouldn't have taken money out in the first place if i thought i didn't have it... understand now?

yeah i do have banking online but i'm waitin on a new pin at the moment so i can't access it..
