    Tough break..

Cats often go off for a wander though.. I wouldn't give up on her just yet. I've had cat's gone for a couple of weeks and then turn up on the doorstep as if nothing happened.

Chances are it'll get hungry and come home.

ah I know, this is a very domesticated cat though!

she's 8 next month and hardly ever stays out all night!

this is only the second time she's been missing (she got knocked down when she was just 1 and didnt come home for 2weeks!)

I just cant imagine where she'd be... She fights a lot with the neighbour cats, they all hate each other so I'm thinking she might have gotten scared off maybe. :(

Lost cats are nearly always very close by - within a quarter mile. (Except for uncastrated males, which can get in a fight or go looking for a woman and get lost.)

Stick up notices with your phone number in all the streets in a circle for the quarter mile around your house. Ask people to look in their garages and sheds. Put your mobile number on, but don't offer a reward. If you have a photo of the cat, all the better.

And go and visit the pounds and shelters. And stick the notice up in local vets' waiting rooms too, and anywhere you think people might see it - garda stations, docs' offices, shops, post offices.

Hey Dearg! Any sign of the cat?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 834 ✭✭✭dearg_doom

    wooot

    she came back last night!!

woke me up at 4.30 AM  !!!!

I was asleep, dreaming and suddenly heard the cat meowing and my first instinct was to shout "STFU Tiger, I'm sleeping!"

then I copped on, and got up, opened the window and there she was!

She has been gone 12 days and she looks as if she hasn't eaten since she left so she probably wasn't with a 'foster' family!! The poor thing is a bag o' bones.

She's also lost her collar, so I reckon she may have caught it on something and she could have been stuck there for the last week and a half:confused: I'd really love to know what she's been up to for the whole time,

    I don't know but I'm just happy she's back!!

She seems in good nick otherwise thankfully.

THANKS to ye all for all the kind words/website recs!!

Just saw this thread and so happy your cat came back!

We have a cat missing now just over two weeks. Really miss her and giving up hope of her coming back at this stage. We have another cat who is the mother of the one that is missing and she really is not the same since. The cat that went missing (Roo) is three years old and is never gone for more than a few hours at a time. I have searched the whole area and put up notices etc. I phoned every vet and shelter and no joy either. Last Monday I got a call from someone saying that a cat had wandered into his garden about a mile from where I live. He described the cat and it sounded exactly like mine. I was in work which is about 15 miles from home but I jumped in the car and drove back. When I got there and saw a different cat I was so upset, cant begin to describe the disappointment. The worst part is not knowing what has happened, even if I had found her dead somewhere at least I would know. For 2 weeks now I wait up late and first thing in the morning have a look outside. Trying to keep some hope but after 2 weeks reality does start to sink in.

sorry to hear that Felixdhc, i hope your cat is ok.

I know how distressing it is, as you say even if you found her dead it would be a bit of closure, that's exactly how I felt yesterday!

I'd still like to know where Tiger has been for the last while though:)

It's heart breaking about the mothercat too,

Have you tried ringing the DSPCA/ dog pound?

Tried the DPSCA alright but not the dog pound. I'll have to look up the local one and try. I would suspect she may have got knocked down. It was very windy the day she went missing and people drive like lunatics in my area. Its been my fear since we moved to where we are now that one of our cats would get knocked down. I have heard if they are hit by a car and not killed instantly that they tend to crawl somewhere out of the way. Looked around the edges of local roads and ditches etc last weekend too (even stood in around 8 inches of mud, I had to laugh though at that!)

It sounds like the worst has just been confirmed. My girlfriend just phoned to say a builder had called in to our house saying there is a dead cat around the corner where new houses are being built. We have a sign in the front window of our house with a picture of her and he said the cat is the same as in the picture. Trying to stay somewhat composed in work, I really cant believe it. I will have to go around there tomorrow and get her, so sad and unfair. I dont know how I will deal with looking at her after two weeks but she deserves not to be just left there.

So very sorry to hear that. It is so heartbreaking, sad and unfair to loose a pet like that. At least you have closure to grieve and can give her a nice place to rest. She'll be with you for a long time to come. My beloved cat died 5 years ago and I still think about/ miss him although, 4 years after, I got 2 cats again. The good memories will prevail.

Thanks for your kind words. I am so sad, I really cant believe it. I have had cats all my life and have gone through the loss of four now. I swore after the last one I would never get a cat again. Then about a year later a stray arrived in my garden and I couldnt help but feed her. It turned out she was pregnant and had four kittens a few weeks later. We found homes for two of them and kept the other two. I fell for the smallest of the bunch which was Roo. My g/f picked another one. We moved from that house about a year later and the cat my g/f picked disappeared shortly after. We never knew where that one went, that was heart breaking. Now, two years later we are back to just the first cat. I feel so sorry for her because she really seems lonely and I would imagine she has seen her daughter as the site is only a couple of hundred metres away. I am dreading going over there tomorrow. I dont know how to deal with it, nearly wish now that I didnt know. All the memories of her all flooding back this evening and crying like a big baby in my office. I hope I feel better tomorrow :(
    Sorry for the long waffle

Delighted to hear that she's back. Note that the vast majority of collars on sale now have a little elastic insert that simply snaps with any significant pressure to break open the collar. These are specifically designed to ensure that the cat won't get caught on a branch or similar.

yeah, she used to be an expert at getting the collar off!!

those elasticy bits must have saved millions of silly cats at this stage!

    that's terrible,

I know t's little consolation but at least you can stop worrying about her now and grieve her properly.

:( thats so sad Felixdhc!! I don't know what I'd do if something happened to my cat - luckily he's really tame and not bothered going off - he just stays inside or in the garden..

I am so sorry to hear about you cat. The stats for Ireland is that 1 in 4 will be killed on the road. Terrible stats.Unspayed/un neutered males and females are at most at risk. I am lucky I have a fenced in garden for my own peace of mind for my lot.
    Take care.

People seem to have strange perceptions of cats. They do not need to go out and night and come in with the milk man in the morning, by all means bring in the milk man but leave the cat inside. And of course never give cats milk.
Cats adapt very well to being inside and as long as they have enough mental stimulation as in toys, scratching posts, quality human time and of course a litter tray, food and water they will be fine.
That way you are not heartbroken when your cat does not come home.
It seems strange to get a pet, care for it love it, then put it out in an environment which does not care for cats.1-4 are killed on roads and 1-6 are killed by man made dangers and in Ireland "Man it's self" Is not very cat tolerant.
Keep them inside or cat proof your garden, this means they have the best of both worlds and your neigbours don't complain of cat poop in their garden.

Why not give cat milk anyway,i never do,she doesnt even take it,she seems to get it in puddles

Depends on the cat, and their particular mood at the time ... try leaving our two in sometimes and you'll be woken up at 2,3,4 or 5 in the morning by them tearing around the place chasing each other, or climbing up on the dressing table knocking things over, other times they'll sleep through the night no problem.
Cats adapt very well to being inside and as long as they have enough mental stimulation as in toys, scratching posts, quality human time and of course a litter tray, food and water they will be fine.
Again, depends on the cat, we've bought toys and scratching posts for all our cats, all of which with a few exceptions have been roundly ignored. They'll much prefer chasing a leaf or a fly around the garden, and have decided that my workshop door makes a great scratching post, while the one we bought for them gets completely ignored. As for toys, cardboard boxes and paper bags win out every time:)
And of course never give cats milk.
Depends ... many cats are lactose intolerant, but not all. One of ours miauows like mad whenever you get the milk bottle out of the fridge for some, the other just can't be bothered.

Our cat has gone missing several times, once for up to 2 months. But when you presume the worst they come back. Unfortunatly the poor cat in question died 3 weeks ago at the ripe old age of 17. She liked milk, espically buttermilk or mill just passed its date.

My brother's cat used to go missing all the time. One time he disappeared for a week. Eventually he turned up on the door-step completely soaking wet, bleeding and missing chunks of fur. He managed to pull through though and lived on for four more years before he eventually died of a gum infection.
