    Hi,
Im using WIN 2K and yesterday my broadband went down for (apparently no reason). I didnt make any changes to my machine and when I turn the Netopia Router off my machine recognises the LAN has been diabled and turning it back on it says its fine.
But when I try to open a webpage it says the page cannot be displayed?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    M

I had the same problem, open up a c promt and try to ping you modem. Type ping (Your router address here) - not quite sure what the ip is. If you get and error code 2 then the only sollution is to reinstall windows. Hope you dont have to do this but it sounds frightenly familiar.

If you can ping your router then the problem probably lies with your internet options. Keep playing with them.

Reset the netopia, there's a pin hole at the back, stick a pen in it for 10seconds then release.

Check you IP address - dos prompt - ipconfig
if you get an ip of 169.x.x.x that's the problem, that's a default windows ip, try entering ipconfig /renew. You should get an IP of 192.168.1.x .

tring pinging the router, ping 192.168.1.254, does it reply?

check IE internet options - connections - lan settings - make sure there's nothing ticked in there.

Are you using ethernet (yellow cable) or usb (blue cable)?
if you're using usb, reinstall the drivers
if you're using ethernet, try manually configuring your ip address
    e.g.
    IP: 192.168.1.2
    subnet: 255.255.255.0
    default gateway: 192.168.1.254

    prim dns: 159.134.237.6
    sec dns: 159.134.248.17

    Good luck :)

Thansk for your help guys I will try that tonight.

I do remember adding in the routers administration page as a favorite on IE (it had an IP address similar to what you guys list) and when I tried to browse that (after I found I couldnt access any websites) it said I couldnt access the admin page either.

Which is strange as it can see the router (by switching it on and off as I said initially)

Anyway as I say thanks and I'll give those suggestiosn a shot!
    =)

One more small piece of info. I am told that some of the Eircom/Netopia units are now supplied with the WAN connection type set to instant-on. Mine is set to always-on and the same person was advised to change to this setting.
    Might be something.
    Browse to router: http://192.168.1.254
Click expert mode, & ok if a yoke pops up.
    Click configure.
    Click WAN.
    Click ppp over ethernet Vcc1
I think it's the third box Instant-on, change to always-on
    Click submit.
    Click restart.

    Cheers
    E.

Well I'd a busy night last night. First off I tried to ping the router and no joy.
So I checked the ipconfig and it was 169.x.x.x  so I then changed it manually and messed around with the IE settings and I could ping the router fine but I couldn't browse to the router at http://192.168.1.254

Anyway after aboiut 2 hours of that I just went with the windows re-install and it seemed to work fine (again  ) but sure I got there in the end!

Thanks for all your help guys. newbie2, for what I did but didn't want to do! azezil for some great tips and tonky for the fixes (which I've applied)

    Cheers guys
