Im trying to choose a DVD recorder from this list http://www.komplett.ie/k/kl.asp?bn=10034

I dont get all these DVD+R/RW/DVD-R/RW/RAM , so which one should i get price wise. Would one of those NEC DVD recorder ND-3520A IDE Black Bulk,DVD+R/+RW/DVD-R/-RW (Dual layer) do me for €62?

thats the one i'd go for, dont worry bout RAM no-ones uses it, +/- RW is what you want to look out for, its 16x dual layer aswell, one thing there id look into is the 2meg buffer, the more expensive ones have an 8meg buffer, and im not sure what performance gain you get with that extra 6 megs, maybe someone else will have a better idea

Sony 710 for 69 is better, just got one, can't believe how silent it is !

Plextor are far better than NEC as far as i have read...i have a plextor 712A and it does the job fine...also burns 8x DVD-R discs @ 12x for some reason...

.... sort of. It's making dirty big comeback in the CE (consumer electronics) market (ie standalone DVD recorders) because it is rewritable 100,000 times as oppose to 1,000 times for the + and - and is therefore better at doing the VCR replacement thing. It now has 50% of that market.

As far as PC is concerned + is winning by a large margin (in EU) because of it's better error correction (than -r). Still not as good as -RAM, but cheaper disks and better compatibility.

I'd go for an LG, they do everything (+ - RAM) and make at least 2 copies (one day to day, one archive) of everything important.

I've an ND3520 and its very good. Does the job. But there is very little difference in time between x4 (15mins) and x8 speed(12 mins) in writing and most places recommend to burn at 4 speed to increase the data life of the dvd. In my opinion DVD+R do seem to be more reliable and what I use. Rewritables (DVD+-RW) are little use as too fragile and slow and permanent DVD+R disks are only about 60c each anyway.
Dual Layer disks are currently hard to get (about 7 or 8 euros per disk).

I've got a Black NEC 1100A for sale @ 50 euros (with a few blanks) if you are interested. (http://support.ap.dell.com/docs/storage/p46434/en/specs.htm)

I've got the NEC 3520A as well and am very happy with it. I'd recommend it to anyone. Sony should be ok as well, I've a Sony combi drive which works very well. Plextor have a larger 8meg cache I think but you'll nearly get 2 of the others for one Plextor and the difference is'nt that huge in optical drives.
