He is among 166 nominees and has been nominated for his work in raising awareness on HIV and AIDS in Africa.

However, it is expected that the prize will go to one of the relief groups helping victims of the Asian Tsunami, reports Reuters.

The director of the Norwegian Nobel Institute, Geir Lundestad said yesterday: "We have received 166 nominations so far, of which 29 are organisations. The geographical scope is wide."

It has been rumoured that Ravi Shankar, Pope John Paul and former US Secretary of State Colin Powell have also been nominated!

Nobel quality control is slipping somewhat.. The only thing that propped-up corpse of a pope has done in the last 15 years is stay alive long after he should have had the decency to die, Bono highlights important causes, but you get the impression he hasn't a clue what he's doing, and Colin Powell?? Condi Rice (his protegé, and make no mistake) is one of the most destructive forces in world politics at the moment.
Like knighthoods, if one of these twits get a Nobel Prize, we'll see folks denouncing theirs.
But I suspect no one will give back the money.

I think any kind of "awards" ceremony is always bollox.

For example, you know the golden spider? Guess how you get one of them?

Remeber the Q (quality) mark? Guess how you got one of them?

It's always about the $, just a way to market your product/service, or less commonly these days, it's political.

    Awards are bull****.

Bono has done more singlehandedly to relieve Third-world debt than all the Armani-clad finance ministers that could be packed into a United Nations conference room .

In other news large portions of Sweden are now generating power from the rotating corpse of Alfred Nobel.

Indeed. There should be a set of rules as to how to act/not act on the internet.

No like don't be a pedantic twat and correct people's genuine mistakes. If my entire sentence was txt spk or some bóllox fair enough, but seriously. Cop on. There's nothing more annoying than a gimp correcting small mistakes.

As it was a genuine mistake by someone with a good grasp of English I presumed you'd like to know that in this instance your usage was wrong, for future reference. If you were a l33t txt speaking peon I wouldn't have bothered correcting you as I'd expect the normal "u durnt half 2 be abel to spel on tha intrunet". Evidently I was wrong.

And I've distracted from what I thought was a pretty good gag about Nobel turning in his grave. You live and learn.

    Indeed. I thought so too.

"Good grasp of English"? I like to think of myself as being fluent, you pretentious snak*. Even in backing away from an argument and attempting to be somewhat gracious your tone is mildly insulting.

    *snak - my new insult

Is this one of these times (once a year) when someone has to point out that almost any university professor and a bag of others get to nominate people for the prize and at the nomination stage there's no quality control whatever?

I'm almost waiting for another article to be written in the UCG student newspaper by some lazy hoore who couldn't bother their ass to check the nomination process (last years ran along the lines of "Oh Noe, who nominated Bush OMG not good")
