Question about PcAnywhere

Installed PC Anywhere today on 2 computers one in work(which is networked) and one at home. ( May great idea of trying tele-working i think is going down the pan)

I have a question regarding connecting to the work computer which I set up as a host as the IP on DNSSTUFF.com differs to the one given to me on the right hand column when the the program is waiting for connection (presumally because I am behind a firewall). Which IP do I actually use when connecting via TCP/IP as I am currently getting connections problems or do I need to change the outgoing ports.

I have installed the pcanywhere software on my office computer which has access to the network do I also need to install it on to the LAN network to give me access to the network.

Any website with PCAnywhere Tech Beginners info would also be greatful, As I would like to get this working before the summer!! :D

    Thanks again
    Phil

the one given to you online is the ip you should connect to.
the one shown by the program is, as you belive, the one issued by your router.

assuming you have a internet-router-pc setup all you need to do is enable port forwarding to the correct ports for pc anyhwere
www.portforward.com will sort out your forwarding problem and you should be able to use google to determine the correct ports to setup.

if you have dynamic ip from your isp head to www.no-ip.com where you can reister for dynamic url forwarding to save having to remeber a new ip evey morning, aswell as not having to worry if the connection drops for a few minutes.

    /ps
i assume it worked out well with the ebay purchase?

Chalk always a life saver , is it then possible to sort this out to night from the computer at home or do I have to mess with the settings tommorow in work.

as from the below it looks good that I couldnt get it up and running tonight

Also I was told that running broadband can make a difference is that true.

Yeah Chalk worked out very good . This is defo authentic and was able to register the disk without any probs . Now for the hard part actually getting it to work is the hard bit as the IP department are always busy when it comes to tele-working issues

I'm guessing you're trying to get a PC Anywhere connection to go from your home PC using your internet connection there to your work PC using the offices internet connection ?

The problem here is that your work computer probably doesn't have a direct connection to the internet (especially if it's IP address is 10.x.x.x, 172.16.x.x or 192.168.x.x). Getting around this involves some pretty major configuration changes to your router, firewall or whatever is providing your office's internet connection. You really really need to get your IT department to look after this for you.

Thanks stevenmu , looking at it this morning , needs a tough bit of confiq , your right my internal ip starts with 10 etc and is defo behing a firewall . I tired connecting to my external ip address but had probs with the router.

I'll a have a crack it over the weekend . Plan B is GoToMyPc which will work around this problem and get access if the computer is online and the software . Might be quicker than setuping the PC Anywhere .

Expensive little thing but there is a 60% discount on the annual subscription at the moment via the free trial . Anyone know if you can order 60 mins connection like the trial instead of buying montly and annual subscriptions.

Addresses in the range 10.x.x.x (and the others I mentioned above) are what's known as private IP addresses. These are IP addresses that are just for use internally by companies or others with home networks, they can never exist as real addresses on the Internet. This is the main reason why PC Anywhere can't connect to it, as far as your home PC is concerned the work PCs IP address doesn't exist, it only exists within your office network.

It may be possible by setting up a NAT Tunnel (I think that's what it's called anyway) on whatever machine provides internet connectivity to your office, your home PC would then try and make a PC Anywhere connection to this machine which would then know to forward it on to your work PC. Obviously this would need to be done by your IT people.

The GoToMyPC looks interesting, I'm not sure if it would work though. Your work PC probably can browse the web only through a Proxy Server (In Internet Explorer go to Tools->Options->Connections->Lan Settings). The way this works is, when you try to go to a web site, such as boards.ie, your browser send a request for boards.ie to the proxy server, the proxy then downloads the page you want and sends it back to your browser. GoToMyPC seems to be able to work through a firewall alright but it doesn't mention anything about a proxy server. Reading through the site they mentioned that when you log in to their website, their server sends a request to your work PC for a connection, I don't think this'll be able to go through the proxy server, because nothing has sent asked the proxy for information from their servers it won't no where to forward the data on to. The only way I could see it working is if their software that runs on your PC is constantly checking their servers to see if you're trying to connect. Still, seeing as it's a free trial it's worth a shot anyway.

Yeah I might have to summit defeat and hand it over to the IT department . Thats the best bet I think as they know what there talking.

However picking up on off your points could I use something like a Web Tunnel as I have installed Premiedus WebTunnel and that seem to run straight through the office proxy and run on the Premiedus Servers . However I think it makes the IP address anoymous so it might not be able to connect.

Anyway thanks your a fountain of knowledge

From what I can see WebTunnel is just an anonymiser. It acts pretty much like a proxy server. If you want to see a web page you send a request to their server which downloads the page for you and send it back. The benefits are that it can let you view URLs that may have been blocked by your company, and it means the owners of the webpage don't have a record of your visit. They just see that Premiedus connected. Very usefull for terrorists and paedophiles*, I don't think it'll be much use here though.

*I don't mean to imply that anyone using it is one of these, there are prefectly valid reasons to hide yourself on the net.

Yeah thanks again , thought as much it was just anonymizer.

In the meantime I got GoToMyPC working tonight actually does what it says on the tin . Set it up on the work computer (2 mins it took) and this evening it worked with no problems (which surprised me it even had the screen saver running when I connected ) Does this mean when I am connect from home , my computer screen in work ie the one connected actually reflects real time the changes on that screen in work or does the screen in work still just have the screen saver whizzing about

However I read the small print of the trial offer and the cheeky devels have 30 day trial or 60 minutes use what ever comes first , so it want be that much of a free trial unless work at lightspeed . Anyway impress little kit .

I'm surprised it works through the proxy but its good to know, we use pc anywhere in work a lot to access client sites so this could be very usefull.

Yeah stevenmu its work a treat at the moment , still waiting for the IT boys to get back to me over pcanywhere .

The GoToMyPC is also extremely fast , no hassle or anything , I am very impressed with it , worked in 2 mins and worked on my pda within 5 mins .

Only thing is its expensive even with the hugh discounts on offer and the bugger with their 30 day trial (or 60 mins) .
