Contradictory Sayings

The old wise sayings sometimes seem to be in direct opposition to one another.

You can't teach and old dog new tricks, yet you're never to old to learn.
Absence makes the heart grow fonder, but out of sight, out of mind.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained, although it's better to be safe than sorry.
The more the merrier, but too many cooks spoil the broth.
The truth hurts, but lies make baby Jesus cry.

There's loads more, but I forgot them in the time it took to eat my lunch.

Especially gifts of big wooden horses.

Maybe: don't look a gift horse in the mouth, unless it's made of wood and brought by Greeks.

I don't want to piss on your parade, but that just means it was fresh WHEN it was frozen. Did you really not get that?

What happens is the hitchhiker gets into the car, and is attacked by the driver. However, in the hitchhiker's struggle, the car swerves into a tree, and thus, it is dangerous for both parties.

I think the secret behind sayings has been uncovered, that they simply suit the scenario and can never be taken as wisdom, ever.

This is so wierd, I was just thinking of making a thread about this yesterday, and I never seen this one before. Anyways..

    "Never say Never"...

It's not exactly a saying as such, well it is in a way I suppose... "Can I ask you a question?"

    and finally...

    "Expect the unexpected"
