Bought an NEC DVD burner for about 70 quid - it didn't come with any software. Any recommendations as to what software I can download to make it all work nicely? Free would be nice but I wouldn't rule out paying a small amount if it were a good product...

    CDBurnerXP Pro
CD/DVD burner that is able to write CD-R, CD-RW, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW discs, creating either data or video discs. It can also create audio-CDs, rip audio-CDs, burn and create ISO images, convert WAV files to MP3 and vice versa, verify discs after burning, create bootable discs, print covers for your creation, convert BIN/NRG to ISO, etc. It supports Burn on the Fly and Burn-Proof hardware. It apparently works with most IDE, USB, Firewire and SCSI drives (or so the site says). Supported systems include Windows 98, ME, 2000 and XP

    DeepBurner Free Version
Allows you to burn data CDs and DVDs, audio CDs, build and burn ISO images and create bootable CDs and DVDs. It does not support the copying of CDs and DVDs though. This is a Windows program. This software is for personal use only; business and educational use is not allowed

    ISO Recorder Power Toy
Add-on for Windows XPs, which comes with rudimentary CD burning facilities out of the box. ISO Recorder adds the ability to copy CDs and create ISO images from your existing CDs. At the time this review is written, the software does not yet support XP SP2. There is also no support for video or audio CDs

    DVDShrink
Allows you to backup your own dvds but doesn't burn on its own but one of the better/easier dvd copiers to use

Thanks for the replies. Those will do the trick for burning DVDs, but what about actually watching them?

You can add DVD Decrypter to the above list.

Great for making backups for games.

I think if he was into making backups he'd just acquire a copy of nero :p

VLC Player is a good freeware player for all video formats.
