Installing CPU fan - quick reply appreciated!

    Hi.

I'm putting together an Aopen EZ18. It comes with its own CPU fan. The Sempron CPU that I'm putting in there also comes with its own fan. However, the CPU warranty says that it will be void if I don't install the AMD fan that came with the CPU.

Are all CPU fans pretty much the same? Will it really matter which one I install?

Thanks for any help with this - I'm trying to get the whole thing done tonight.

NO there not all the same..
what kind of cpu fan is it? make/model no?
It should have the same connectors as the cpu you have (socket A presumably?)

and it shouldl also be able to handle the speed of the cpu..

The chances are if you bought all the gear in some sort of pre-specified package then itll work just fine. But if you didnt then just do a quick check on google with the fan model.

Thanks for the quick reply. The fan that came with the cube is just a standard Aopen model. I don't see a model number on it. The AMD fan is the one that came boxed with the Sempron 2300+ CPU. Again, I don't actually see a model number anywhere.

It's a pretty lowly CPU so both should be able to handle the speed. They're both Socket A as well. The one that came with the cube is about 1 1/2 times the size of the AMD one though. Don't know if it matters...

Apologies - I know I'm not giving you much to go on here...

Ta. Got the white one as it was over 60 quid cheaper than the black one. Couldn't justify the extra expense just for a paintjob!

The only other thing annoying me is that the Iiyama monitor that was supposed to be "white" is more like "very very very very light beige".... :(

The one that came with the "CPU" would be your best bet. If you can wire the other one inside the case somewhere it will aid general cooling a little. ;)

Would it add much noise? One of the reasons I went for this cube is that it's got a silent running option that by all accounts is actually pretty silent indeed.

Of course, my even asking about it adding noise skips quickly past more awqward questions like "how, where and to what would I wire the other one inside the case?"... :D

Wire to the same socket as your other fan. Just take off the plug and stick the wires into the holes of the CPU fan plug before attaching it to the mobo. Or nick both wires on the CPU fan and wrap round exposed wire, cover with small piece of Insulating tape. Super glue the fan to the case in an area where there is free space. (not flat of course, one edge so it protruds into the case area. I did this a while back on one of my other PCs. Those fans don't make much noise, but do help the circulation.
Just an idea instead of leaving it lying around.

I think I'll be leaving that for a more adventurous day. Thanks for the tip though - I certainly won't be throwing away the fan.

I ended up sticking in the AMD fan. It's smaller but at least the warranty on the CPU will remain intact.

Fiar enough. Should only take a few minutes though. Good move with the AMD fan choice. Warranty intact and also it would have been designed for that CPU as well. All the best.
