Just after hearing the Janis Joplin song "Summertime". What a voice! Sounds like it could peel the paint off a wall.

Can anyone list me off me a few more Janis tunes worth listening to?

    Summertime, what a ****in tune!

i really like Janis amazing vocalist, such soul, good band too,

i have the albums 'Cheap Thrills' and 'Pearl'

Cheap Thrills is my favourite of the two, (it has Summertime on it) if youre just looking for individual tunes try out

    Piece of my heart
    Me And Bobby McGee
    Ball And Chain

apparently theyre making a film about her, think Renee Zweilleger is playing it, not sure how thatll work out though

The first time I heard that version of summertime I actually welled up with tears...I know that's a bit of a strong reaction, but WHAT A SONG! she just blows me away. Her version of Me and Bobby McGee is nearly as good.
Check out Turtle Blues, I have a live version and it's fantastic. Also her Natural Woman is worth a listen and Cry and One good man. Just get a best of and go from there I think.

 Looks like it's very possible that this might happen
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0371879/

God, could they have picked a worse person... well maybe it'd be worse if they picked Mini Driver... but not that much worse.... Jesus, Janis Joplin was a larger then life character with a huge voice and ickle little, teeny-weeny Renée Zellweger just isn't going to be able to fill those buckled boots! I mean, ok, she can sing, she proved that in Chicago... but even that, while it was a good performance was small. I'M OUTRAGED!!!!

Chelsea Hotel #2 by Leonard Cohen was written about her.

I remember you well in the Chelsea Hotel,
you were talking so brave and so sweet,
giving me head on the unmade bed,
while the limousines wait in the street.
Those were the reasons and that was New York,
we were running for the money and the flesh.
And that was called love for the workers in song
probably still is for those of them left.

Ah but you got away, didn't you babe,
you just turned your back on the crowd,
you got away, I never once heard you say,
    I need you, I don't need you,
    I need you, I don't need you
and all of that jiving around.

I remember you well in the Chelsea Hotel
you were famous, your heart was a legend.
You told me again you preferred handsome men
but for me you would make an exception.
And clenching your fist for the ones like us
who are oppressed by the figures of beauty,
you fixed yourself, you said, "Well never mind,
we are ugly but we have the music."

And then you got away, didn't you babe...

I don't mean to suggest that I loved you the best,
I can't keep track of each fallen robin.
I remember you well in the Chelsea Hotel,
that's all, I don't even think of you that often.

I think I could actually see Zweilleger pulling that off as far as acting and appearance goes (picturing her with more meat on her bones than in Chicago and a Janis Joplin wig). I don't think anyone could really pull of Janis' voice though, and many singers would refuse (apparantly trained singers get sore throats just listening to her) it'd have to be dubbed.

never knew that leonard cohen tune was about janis, its a great ould number,

Janis wasnt really good looking, but (i think anyway) sexy as ****,

wouldnt mind getting head from her, but then again i haven't written a tune of the quality of "Sisters of Mercy"

Janis Joplin is excellent. She talks awful **** on her live cds though. That's mad that about the leonard Cohen song. Never knew that, or that they were together.

you fixed yourself, you said, "Well never mind,
we are ugly but we have the music."

    damn right on both counts.

aye it could have been interpreted as a boast, great tune though, and its not as if she was around to argue,

    goddam golden brown

aye it could have been interpreted as a boast
I don't think it's so much that, indeed the last verse makes it clear that he didn't actually know her that well, more a matter of "gentlemen don't say".
and its not as if she was around to argue
    Or to apologise to.

Glad to see some Cohen appreciators:) "you preferred Handsome men, but for me you would make an exception"... I don't think Cohen is that bad looking!!?

    cohen is brilliant,

    "sisters of mercy" is perfect

    Yes, yes he is:)

He has allot of amazing tracks, I've become quite obsessed with him over the past year or so. I've managed to get all his albums anyway, they are amazing!

And if you ever see the live 1988 performance of "Joan of Arc" on Austin City Limits. Wow! Not to mention the same shows "The Partisan" performance
