If you are driving and coming from anywhere close to the N7, take that route to Roscrea, then up to Portumna, Loughrea and on the Galway.

I went to Galway on a Saturday morning from the Firhouse area and it took 4hrs 15min. This was due to a combination of traffic and bad roads.

Coming home I chose to cut down thru Portumna to Roscrea and motorway from Portlaoise on a Monday, mid morning and did it in 3hrs. The mileage was only a couple of miles in the difference.

I told a friend who has travelled up and down a couple of times and used both routes, it takes him 3hrs to 3 hrs 15min going this way. The traditional route takes him 3hrs 15min to 3hrs 45min. He lives in Saggart.

Plane down, if you can make it out to the airport in Dublin and be checked in for the 1830 flight. Otherwise you haven't a notion of making Galway by 2030.

If that works out, then take the very early morning train from Galway to Heuston.

It looks nigh on impossible and very expensive to me. What I'd do is "kill off" a relative (nothing major that can be verified, but at the same time one that may warrant a trip to Galway, try some form of Godparent) and enter into a glorious web of lies.

If you could get off a bit early then the 4.50 train which arrives in Galway at 7.10 would be perfect,
otherwise the 5.55 gets in to Galway at 8.35.
Really depends on where in Dublin and Galway you are going to be.

I endorse Robbo's suggestion, a bit of lying to the boss is always in order.

getting back is no problem as you can get an early train.
I think you will need to get off a little early for a "dentist appointment" in order to make the train down.
I think the plane is far more hassle since its out of town with no real quick way of getting there. Also the airport in Galway is 6 miles out(at least the station is right in the middle of eyre square.
    Good Luck

this is a very good suggestion.
in fact, i think i'm going to take it.
i'm currently thinking about a clever lie...
    ie: i'm sick/someone else is sick/dead.

I presume you've rejected "I'm playing a gig in Galway. Can I leave a few minutes early. I'll make up the time by coming in early/working through lunch/whatever." Honest is usually the best policy.

start acting sick the day you go and then call in sick the day your ment to be back. a very bad mirgrain would work.

    Train tickets are:
    [1] Expensive.
[2] More expensive on a Friday evening
