ermm think windows movie maker might do the job, not sure though. You might have to lower the quality or size of the frame

If its a divx file (which it sounds like it is) it's not really possible. You'll be re-encoding a lossy format with a lossy format so the quality will be crap afterwards.

wouldnt really be that bad, drop the bitrate by about 50kbps
    or recode the audio maybe
how about crop 1 pixel either side of the file
not sure if its worth the effort at all tho.

    nuke that sonofabitch :/

I know you can get 900MB discs... Got 'em about a year or two ago in Peats.
Never figured out how to burn them properly though :/

Still, that was my own unwillingness to find out how.

    What do you mean?

You need to overburn 900MB CD's so as to fit everything onto them.

You may be mest to reencode it smaller to fit it on. Or get some larger CD's. Or maybe even cut it across two CD's.

but sure you could probably overburn the 700meg cd to fit an extra 40megs, or failing that get an avi splitter and see if you can trim anything from the beginning and end

Can you explain how i could do that?

if your using nero, then its option -> expert features, set a new lenght, say from 80mins to whatever, ive never gone over 90

edit:// actually that was with a 850meg cd, i think the maximum for a 700meg is about 83 mins

If the AVI file is a movie say with end credits( that you dont need) you can use VirtualDub to cut off the end very efficiently. Otherwise you could re-encode it as someone says and take off about 50kbps.. Virtualdub will do this also..
    www.doom9.org to download virtualdub(free).

If you're stuck on how to use it reply here and I'll tell you.. I just don't feel like typing a lot at the moment.

Is it definitely 740MB or 7400000 bytes?

    yep...

when you open it to burn with nero how much space does it go over by?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 488 ✭✭lad12

about 40 mb's me thinks...wud a 800 mb cd be any use..i was told that some cd burners wont work properly with the 800 or 900 mb cd's though..

I'd say most burners would have no problem with 800MB CDs. My current one and my previous one bothe burn them with no problem. They tend to be pretty hard to find these days though - I spent weeks looking around all the shops in town to no avail. I then found a pack of 10 for €6 on sale at the checkout of a supermarket in Germany at the weekend. Coincidentally, I have a 742MB file on my hard drive that I've been wanting to burn for ages, and now I finally can. :)

I seen them on peats web site so im gong to get them there hopefully..but if i burn the films to the cd's and make VCD's outta them will i loose much quality in the film?

740Mb is probably beyond what you can overburn onto a 700Mb CD. If I remember correctly about 733Mb/734Mb is the limit for them. You could probably trim off a few megs by removing (or re-encoding) the end credits and get it small enough to overburn onto a 700Mb CD.

Sometimes, when making them into VCD's, my holiday movies have gotten sometimes larger :(

My advice; make they into a VCD, then use DVD-Shrink to resize it to fit onto a 700MB CD. Should work.

Firstly, DVDShrink is only for DVD's. It won't work on anything else.

Secondly, the virtualdub idea for cutting off the end credits is a good one, you could also try trimming out the intro if it has a trimmable intro.

If that fails, you're left with either reencoding it at a lower bitrate, or trying to overburn the extra megs and seeing what happens. The most you could hope to get would be 40 megs on a really good CD, but on average you can get 20 megs without a problem.

Hmm, I tried to burn that file to an 800MB CD last night and it failed. It got to 80% and said there was no room left. When I check the file on the CD, its size is correct (780MB) but I can't read it or copy it. I've burned to 800MB CDs loads of times before, so I don't know what's happened here.
So trimming the AVI with VDub might just be your best bet.
