hi, my sister's fish have all died, she's convinced it's the councils fault, messing about with the water.

she reckons there was too much clorine in the water, she was talking to a vet, they said this must be what happened.

anyone else's fish kick the bucket?

You should have to put chemicals in the water that removes chlorine and heavy metals (among other things). If she didn't use these chemicals, its her own fault.

I agree with Ciaran she should have put her herbs and spices in the water with each bucket full out of the tap she must mix dechlorinator (for chlorine) or a dechlor with de-chloramine (for water with chloramines).

what type of fish where they
How did she clean out the filter
How warm was the water she put back in the tank
Did they all die at once or over a period of time

I was walking home from college today and there was a dead salmon with its eyes gouged out cut in half on the ground in Glasnevin...

    ...coincidence?

Unfortunately we do not get PH neutral water out of taps, of a suitable quality for fish to happily swim around in. Its a fact of life.

If you are putting fresh tap water into a tank- put some stress coat in for crying out loud (or a little aloe juice- it removes toxins fairly easily).

Another possibility is rainwater- no toxins, but it is slightly acidic if you test it. For crying out loud bring it to room temperature before adding it to the tank- a mistake I made..... I think I froze the butts off a few zebra dannios.

If you have natural plant life in your aquarium, it will mitigate any nasties that may be in the water.

Regardless of all of this- some varieties of fish are just a lot less forgiving of less than optimum conditions than others are.

If you bring a sample of the water into a good pet store- they will test it for you (not sure what it costs) and you'll know what the story is then.

Various chemicals are put in tap water when it's treated to make it safe for consumption as well as certain chemicals like clcium for teeth etc.
If your keeping fish, you're supposed to treat it with a powder form chemical you can buy in any pet store, aswell as keep it out for a day or so to get it at room tempreture (for goldfish, or appropriate equivelent for tropical fish etc.)
