Provided the new RAM is compatible with your motherboard...

Check how many slots you have on your motherboard, you may be able to use all three 256MB chips together.

Dell, purveyors of the dreaded RD-RAM.

Bit more technical info would be nice, as ciaranfo pointed out compatibility is an issue.
    "Memory" is a little ambiguous.

What's the model of the Dell PC and what type of RAM did you buy?

In fairness to Dell when I tired using cheapo RD-RAM (bought off eBay) in my system I got nothing but error beeps and a blank screen. The seller kindly informed me that Dell mobos are about the only ones he's found that won't work with it.
Now maybe that's changed in the past year but my 2 yr old desktop is still sporting it's 256mb stick which has outlasted a newer 512mb Micron stick installed after purchase.

To the OP: late Dells have 2 DIMM banks....if one already has 256mb installed then pulling it to replace it with another 256mb is a little pointless. The only time you should do that is if the sticks are a different cycle speed, and you want to have them matched...
